HBO has released the trailer for their six-part docuseries based on Michelle McNamara’s book on the Golden State Killer titled I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.
If you’ve never heard of Michelle McNamara’s true crime book, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark stop what you’re doing and go order a copy of it on Amazon right now. Seriously, it’s that good.
If you consider yourself a true crime fan of any kind or you’ve ever heard whispers of the Golden State Killer, then McNamara’s book is a must-read. In her own words, she “hunted the killer with my laptop,” while her husband and daughter were asleep.
Today, HBO released the trailer for their upcoming six-part docuseries based on McNamara’s book. It will premiere on June 28.
“You’ve heard of the Zodiac Killer, and you’ve heard of the Son of Sam, the Golden State Killer is one of the most prolific, violent serial rapists and serial murder — and the tragedy of this case to me is that it is not better-known,” says a voiceover and interviewee in the trailer.
Previously married to actor Patton Oswalt, McNamara spent a significant portion of her life investigating the serial killer who was formerly known as the East Area Rapist before becoming the Golden State Killer.
Many people believe it was her work that has led to the capture of the man they believe is the now-infamous serial killer, Joseph James DeAngelo. While his trial is still awaiting a verdict, it was McNamara who people believe coined the “Golden State Killer” moniker.
“She had material that other investigators had ever seen,” says one man in the trailer.
Sadly, McNamara suddenly passed way in 2016, before she could finish her research. Some parts of her book were cobbled together by her colleagues and husband.
“It was her book, and it’s an amazing book. I wanted to do right by her,” Oswalt told Entertainment Weekly in 2018.
McNamara tracked down everything she could find about the man who terrorized Northern California in the 1970s and ’80s, says Entertainment Weekly.
“McNamara had been working on the story for more than five years, compiling some 3,500 files on her computer about who the killer could have been. In April 2018, California authorities arrested Joseph James DeAngelo as the alleged killer. He has been charged with 13 counts of murder and 13 counts of kidnapping,” reports Entertainment Weekly.
According to the article, the docuseries will use portions of her book read by actress Amy Ryan in addition to new interviews from survivors, investigators, family members, and more.
