Motherland: Fort Salem Season 1, Episode 8 Recap: Citydrop
By Maria Alicia
In episode 8 of Motherland: Fort Salem, the unit has left in a helicopter and is now free-falling into the unknown. What is waiting for them when they land?
When we last saw the girls of Motherland: Fort Salem, they were all off to go on a training mission. What the mission is? We don’t know.
The girls are descending into a field, and Tally still hasn’t gotten the landing right. She has busted her knee on the entry. Raelle is forced to heal her. While she is healing her, Raelle finds out Tally is the one that told Anacostia about Scylla. This can’t be good for morale as they head into team training.
The girls are listening to their briefing and are told if they fail the mission War College will be off-limits. The girls are then off. Abigail steps up as the leader and starts to give orders to each girl. Tally tries to explain herself to Raelle, but she doesn’t want to hear it.

Tally confronts her and ends up pushing Raelle into a car, which sets off the alarm. This is not good for girls that use sound as power. They’re ears instantly start to ring, and they are left vulnerable.
The Bellweather Unit has made it back to the rest of the Fort Salem recruits. The girls are still feeling the pain from the car alarm. Tally and Raelle tell Abigail about Scylla. Abigail is less than pleased that she is Spree and was at her cousin’s wedding.
Raelle becomes restless and leaves the building where the girls are resting up. Of course, the rest of the unit is going to go after her. Raelle wants to find Anacostia. But this battlefield could potentially get worse before it gets better.
When Tally and Abigail go after Raelle, Abigail confronts Tally about not telling her about Scylla. Amid their disagreement, they are attacked. Raelle is still out on her own and finds Helen.
When Raelle tries to explain that they know each other, Helen does not remember and says they have never met before. Helen tells Raelle to return to camp, or she will be reported. This is interesting. On their first encounter, could Helen have been Spree?
Meanwhile, Tally and Abigail are forced to fight their way out as their powers are not working. The Bellweathers win, but Abigail gets a little carried away.
The girls are being praised for their victory in the first part of the mission. Now the girls are being asked to go searching the vacant school room by room and to bring back any enemies alive.
There is still discord amongst the girls. Abigail is now starting to blame Raelle for the death of her cousin because Raelle “brought” Scylla to the wedding.
Abigail finds a room with a timeline of wars on the board, and it sounds like someone is trapped in a closet. It is a trap, but the girls find one enemy to bring back to base.
Tally is attacked in another room by another enemy, and Raelle sees it through the window. Raelle comes in with the assist. I think we all needed this moment.
Anacostia and Helen confront Raelle about the first time she “met” Helen. They tell her that someone from The Spree was impersonating Helen. This confirms for Raelle that Scylla is Spree. Our heart is breaking for her.
Meanwhile, back at Fort Salem, General Adler is giving demands to charge The Spree’s warehouse. They got this intel from probing Scylla’s mind. As the witches approach the warehouse, the entire building explodes.
They have information that the trucks that previously left the warehouse are headed to Boston, maybe near the airport. The only soldiers close enough are, you guessed it, the girls completing the Citydrop training mission.
Anacostia calls the girls over. She gives them new information about having to stop the training and going after the two Spree trucks. This news is heavy for the unit but ends up bringing them back together. Anacostia tells Raelle that The Spree went after her because she is strong. We couldn’t agree more. Raelle has some power.
The girls find themselves jumping out of a second helicopter, but this time they know what’s waiting—the Spree.
The soldiers, with Anacostia as their leader, stand in the middle of the road as Spree is racing toward them. The girls manage to stop the first truck. Tally uses her powers to listen to The Spree’s plan. Raelle is sent into the field to stop anyone that got away from the first truck. Only she finds someone that looks like Scylla. Raelle knows it is not her but takes out her aggression accordingly.
Tally is able to look into the truck and tells Anacostia that the second truck has hostages. Anacostia tells Adler this information, and Adler still wants them to go ahead and destroy it. They wait for the truck to get close enough. The girls do what they can to disintegrate the truck, and we can’t help but notice Tally stand by. She does not agree with Adler’s call.
We find out that not all of the recruits made it through the attack. Abigail has lost someone from her childhood, Libba Swythe.
The girls are back in their dorm and are discussing what actually happened with the second truck. Tally tells them about the civilians in the truck and what occurred with Anacostia. Raelle believes Tally. Abigail might also be on board. She wants to look into it more as a unit.
General Adler and Anacostia are also discussing what happened. Anacostia is not happy about how the cadets were used. Adler is not backing down.
Adil shows up at Abigail’s door to offer comfort. We are here for all of it. Abigail is explaining her frustrations with the mission. We think Abigail is going to find more power from all of this. We can’t wait to see it.
Adler is now making her statement on the television and announces that there were civilians in the truck. She also claims The Spree killed the civilians. Only we know the truth.
Who can the girls trust? Are the girls on their own? At least they know they have each other to fall back on. The Bellweather Unit can handle anything.
We can’t wait to tune in next Wednesday to watch Motherland: Fort Salem on Freeform at 9/8c to see how this unravels.
