The Horror of Dolores Roach is officially in development with Amazon, and we’ll definitely be keeping our eye out for this Sweeny Todd-esque tale.

Last year, we received news that a Blumhouse Television adaption of The Horror of Dolores Roach was in the works. Now we officially know to expect the grotesque tale to be on Amazon. Dara Resnik (Home Before Dark) will be taking on the role of showrunner with podcast creator Aaron Mark at her side, reports Deadline.

The Horror of Dolores Roach shows our titular character after spending sixteen years in prison. Upon release, Dolores quickly takes notice that the Washington Heights she left behind isn’t the one that she’s returned to. With both her family and boyfriend gone, the only person that recognizes her is her old stoner pal, Luis.

Dolores ends up taking residence in the apartment below Luis’ empanadas shop, where she sets up a masseuse parlor. However, things go in a Sweeney Todd direction when the landlord attempts to evict them, and they (with a cannibalistic approach) take matters into their own hands.

Initially, the story of Dolores Roach was a one-woman play titled Empanada Loca and starred Daphne Rubin Vega (from the original Broadway production of Rent). Aaron Mark then moved it into podcast format with Vega still in the lead.

The Horror of Dolores Roach isn’t the only time that Blumhouse has dabbled in adapting podcast-originals.

The studio has signed a deal with iHeartMedia; the two companies will be working together to create fictional thriller podcasts that have the potential of being adapted for television and film.

Not much has been announced in terms of release date or cast, but personally, I’m rooting for Daphne Rubin Vega to continue her role as Dolores Roach.

Next. The Conjuring and 5 films that would work on TV. dark
