Detective Perez requests assistance

Detective Perez (Diana Maria Riva) reappears in the second episode to give Jen her restraining order documents filed against Judy. Except, just as she hands over the files, Judy emerges from Jen’s house, sounding completely domestic and chattering about bay leaves. Perez is shocked. Why on earth would Jen be living with the woman who killed her husband?

Jen and Judy do what they do best — lie. They pin the murder on Steve and add that Judy only confessed to taking the blame to protect the man she loves.

Jen is playing with fire by allowing Judy back into her life, warns Perez. She makes a compelling metaphorical argument, comparing Jen to someone who drowns, sitting in placid water but unaware that a riptide is about to pull her under. In this analogy, Judy is the proverbial riptide.

At first, it appears Perez might let the whole thing blow over. Then she shows up at former Detective Nick Prager’s (Brandon Scott) house. He’s looking worse for the wear after getting thrown off the case and turning to the bottle.

Nick also doesn’t want to return to the force and work under their racist, misogynistic chief again, but he does offer Perez a case file of evidence he’s assembled after doing some digging.

Perez intends to get to the bottom of whatever is going on between Judy, Jen, and Steve, let’s just hope they’re prepared to fend her off.

Odds & Ends

  • Right now, Ben seems like the perennial good guy and maybe even a perfect match for Judy, but does anyone else have a sinking feeling he is hiding something?
  • Judy reminded me of a Disney princess in this episode with her helping save the bird in the garage.
  • It is worth noting that Lorna gives Jen a bottle of fentanyl to help her sleep. I would not be surprised if the drug comes into play soon.
