Judy and Jen finally get rid of Steve’s body in Dead to Me Season 2, Episode 4, and Judy gets a chance to say goodbye while tragedy strikes at Jen’s house.

Picking up where we left off in Episode 3, Dead to Me Season 2, Episode 4 begins with Jen and Judy driving away from the spot where they buried Steve’s body. Following Shandy’s advice, Jen and Judy drove to the Angeles Forest to dispose of him once and for all.

Is everything finally done? Of course not. First, Jen has a mild panic attack, thinking she may have buried her phone six feet under. Luckily, she finds it in her pocket before they’re forced to turn around. Holding her cell phone serves as a beacon to a bored cop in the area which pulls them over and briefly torments them with a few ill-timed jokes.

They’re let off with a ticket, which isn’t a big deal — except as Jen points out, it is a record they were in the area, which could become problematic later.

For now, Jen and Judy stop in at roadside diner called Cindy’s Restaurant for a slice of dry pie and a chance for Judy to go to the bathroom after guzzling water to relieve her throat dusty with grave dirt.

Afterward, the pair check into a fancy hotel nearby, they tell the front desk clerk they’re there for a “girls weekend.” But on the way to the elevator, they run into Jeff (Marc Evan Jackson), Karen’s husband. It appears Jeff is secretly gay and having an affair!

Jen tells him she won’t say anything to Karen, but this could work in her favor later if anyone finds out she’s staying at the hotel. Surely Jeff will lie for Jen if she agrees to lie for him. Or Jen could use what she knows about Jeff to blackmail him into giving up the surveillance footage from the street cam the night of Steve’s murder.

In the hotel room, Jen is beginning to feel better about everything. She thinks they might be progressing past everything now that Steve is buried and not rotting in her freezer. She’s left Christopher in charge of the boys at home and tries to help Judy, who, in contrast, looks terrible.

Judy can’t bring herself to shower or do anything except curl up in bed. She’s reeling from six hours spent digging a grave for her ex-fiancé.

After letting Judy sleep for a few hours, Jen comes up with a way to make amends for not letting Judy give Steve a proper goodbye. She suggests they go down to the hotel bar called Whisper and Winks, where its open bar for the wedding party, which of course Jen pretends they’re part of.

They toast to Steve, and Judy breaks down, revealing that the night after they hit Ted, Steve went to the beach and sobbed like a little kid. She thinks he was genuinely affected by Ted’s death but didn’t know how to express his feelings.

That makes Jen feel terrible, considering the real way Steve died. She starts crying too, mainly out of guilt for killing Steve and not letting Judy give him a proper send-off. She apologizes, and the two women hug it out and tell each other how much they love one another. Then they’re interrupted by some clueless dude that wants to dance. It was so realistic I had to laugh.

Judy confesses she does feel like dancing, except with Jen, not the random groomsman. For the first time this season, Judy and Jen get drunk and have fun while enjoying each other’s company. They also toast to Karen, whose husband is obviously “joined at the d–k” with another man. Eventually, they get kicked out by the bartender who finds out they weren’t really a part of the wedding party from the guy they rejected earlier.

The next day, Jen and Judy wake up (in the same bed I might add), and Jen gets a call from Christopher. The Mom Bird is dead, so they rush back home. They’re pretty sure Adele the puppy killed her, and Henry is distraught. He says he wishes he could have said goodbye. Jen tells him he still can, after all, she and Judy just talked about the importance of letting go.

In the backyard, they create a little burial for the bird, and Jen asks Judy to say a few words, so she sings the song she planned to sing for Steve — “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” — at his grave and fondly remembers some of their best moments together, and at least one not-so-great moment. It’s a healing moment for the whole family as the moment obviously resonates differently for Jen and Judy than it does for Henry.

As the Vulture recap points out, it was good of the writers to add in the dark moment at the end of Judy’s montage of memories where Steve berated Judy on the night of his death and prevented Ted from going to a hospital where he might have survived, so that audiences wouldn’t forget what a terrible guy he was and choose to romanticize his memory instead.

Shandy and her mother show up at Jen’s house later that night, it turns out that Shandy killed the bird. She says she was trying to keep it from flying away and accidentally squeezed it too hard. Shandy admits that Henry is her best friend, and she doesn’t want to tell him, so Jen consoles her by saying she doesn’t have to confess to Henry, adding that sometimes people need a friend more than they need the truth. At least,  that’s what Jen seems to be telling herself to relieve some of the guilt.

Jen takes care of the bird’s babies in her absence, and Judy ships the rock Steve took from the Petrified Forest back to the National Park in apology.

Henry visits the bird’s grave in the yard and finds the wooden bird statue used to kill Steve — why would Jen not get rid of that!? While Charlie visits the storage facility and discovers Steve’s car, what was he doing there in the first place? Charlie mistakenly thinks the car is a secret gift for him, which is not good since that means he might start driving it around, and no one needs Steve’s car back on the road.
