In episode 111 of Netflix series Ultraman, Seiji picks a fight with Shinjiro. Ultimately, though, both are threatened by Moroboshi, who sometimes seems more menacing than heroic.

Previously on Ultraman, Rena Sayama (Tara Jayne Sands) asked Shinjiro (Josh Hutcherson) about the SSSP. We also learned more about the mysterious and obnoxious Seiji (Gunnar Sizemore). As episode 11 begins, Shinjiro learns that Seiji has quit school, alerting him to the likelihood that Seiji only joined to meet him. Before long, Shinjiro sees Seiji again, and Seiji is threatening someone he calls an online con artist.

The man is allowed to leave by Seiji, but only after Shinjiro calms him down. This prompts Seiji to claim that Shinjiro just does as he’s told by the SSSP. Feeling cocky, Seiji (in his own Ultraman suit) then initiates a fight with Shinjiro, decrying how Shinjiro constantly holds back. Shinjiro transforms into Ultraman as well.

For added flavor, Moroboshi (Takuya Eguchi) shows up, who is known for not holding back. And yes, he is also dressed as Ultraman.  Shinjiro pleads with Moroboshi to go easy on him, and it just barely works. Moroboshi slashes Seiji’s prosthetic arm off, then his helmet, and he makes short work of it, too. Seiji’s sent home with his proverbial tail between his legs.

More from Netflix

Later on, it is re-emphasized that Seiji has been cavorting with ormer SSSP scientist and alien, Yapool (Mick Wingert) and that they have problems with the SSSP. By this point, the Netflix series hasn’t made it entirely clear what Seiji’s deal is, but we know he’s a loose cannon with a chip on his shoulder.

We know he survived a plane crashed, with the help of Bemular (Kaiji Soze).  He also obviously knows a lot of inside stuff on the SSSP, which means he’s got some skills.

Museum moments

After the frustrating battle with Seiji, Shinjiro is visited again by pop star Rena Sayama. Also, as before, she seems interested in learning more about Ultraman and the SSSP (to be fair, Shinjiro does work at a museum dedicated to such things). She notes that Shinjiro’s father is Defense Minister Shin Hayata (Fred Tatasciore).

However, Moroboshi actually telepathically threatens to kill Shinjiro if he reveals too much information about their operation. On the possibly brighter side, Rena gets Shinjiro’s phone number. Still, her persistent needling about Ultraman puts him on edge.

Another awkward thing happens: Shinjiro has to leave her to rescue some window washers dangling from their scaffolding. Though he claims his departure was to contact Ultraman, it might be apparent to Rena that Shinjiro himself is the mythic hero.

As if to feed that assumption, Rena then asks him to tell the legendary figure that she knows he’s trying to help. Then she even thanks Shinjiro for saving her at her concert. It seems Rena might put two and two together, with or without Shinjiro’s definite help. The question is, how will Moroboshi take it?
