Motherland: Fort Salem Season 1, Episode 9 Recap: Coup
By Maria Alicia
Things do not seem to be right in Motherland: Fort Salem. General Adler is twisting the truth, The Spree is on the loose, and the Bellweather Unit is left wondering who they can trust.
In the previous episode of Motherland: Fort Salem the Bellweather Unit is realizing they might be on their own. But we pick up in a new place.
A portion of the army is out and seems to be tracking something. Could they be tracking The Spree? We aren’t sure, but they have come across a pentagram of bodies. These are bodies of witches that have had their vocal cords taken out. Haven’t we seen this before?
Back at Motherland: Fort Salem, the Bellweather Unit is discussing how Adler lied. Abigail is trying to talk Tally down and tells her that there are always casualties in war. Tally doesn’t seem to agree.
Abigail’s mother, Petra, is telling her how proud she is of her actions in combat. Petra also tells Abigail that she will need to give the eulogy at Libba’s funeral.
Adlers is now getting the news from Abigail’s mother about the attack where the vocal cords were ripped out. Is it the spree? They do not think so. They think it is yet another group of witches. Adler says that this group is gone and does not exist anymore. Do we now have two enemies? Or does The Spree want us to think that?
Tally is trying to convince the rest of the unit to turn over the information about the hostages from their mission. Tally wants to tell Petra, but Abigail does not agree and thinks they will be in more trouble for even mentioning it.

Adler then goes to Khalida to provide protection for her people in return for her songs, but Khalida would rather see her people become extinct than give up their people’s songs.
The Bellweather Unit goes to Petra to tell her about the hostages and how they are the ones that killed them. Petra tells them exactly what Abigail thought and that there are always casualties of war. But then, Abigail tells her about Scylla being kept on campus, and Petra’s tone changes.
Anacostia and Adler are also discussing Scylla. Anacostia wants to turn her and use her against The Spree, but Adler is not going to take her up on this offer. Adler wants to send her to prison and transport is to be arranged.
All of the women at Motherland: Fort Salem gather for Libba’s funeral. Abigail begins her formal eulogy and breaks the norm to give a very honest and heartfelt one. She highlights their journey together and how they made each other stronger.
After the funeral, everyone is up in the girls’ room including Adil. There is then a tap at the window from a bird. Tally is going to meet Gerit, even though he is married.
Meanwhile, Anacostia is busy hanging out with Scylla. Scylla seems to be in good spirits. Anacostia tells her that Adler wants to send her to prison. Scylla questions why she is still at Fort Salem. Anacostia wants to know about her past, so Scylla asks to see Raelle first. Will Anacostia take the bait?
Adler goes to the President to ask permission for a mission. The President gives her a run for her money and tells Adler that she knows about Spree being on campus. The Bellweather Unit just told Petra the same information. Could Petra be The President’s informant? Adler is going to be out, but is Petra going to be in?
Anacostia finds Raelle and offers her closure with Scylla. But Raelle does not want it. Raelle tells the other girls that Scylla is going to prison and that she has a chance to say goodbye. Abigail tries to convince her to go and tells her how she wishes she could say one more thing to her cousin and Libba. Will Raelle take the offer now?
Just then, Abigail gets summoned by her mother. Petra tells her that big changes are coming. She is basically informing Abigail that she is going to be promoted, but we have a feeling something might happen before that.
Meanwhile, Tally and Gerit are in for a surprise when they get walked in on by Hilary. Tally then finds out that Gerit actually planned for this to happen. It was supposed to be part of a game. Tally did not like being playing. We don’t blame her.
Adil opens up to Abigail about his people being killed in the same way her family was. They also talk about the concern they have about Adler. But, Abigail tells him that the leader is going to change. Should she have told him that?
Anacostia goes back to Scylla and has Raelle with her. Scylla is pleading that she messed up and fell for Raelle. Raelle doesn’t believe any of it. Scylla tells her that she had orders to bring Raelle, but chose to save her instead.
The President is now on the news, but it isn’t really her. The President is merely a puppet that Adler is pulling. Adler is using magic to take over the President and talk as her. Only Anacostia was watching from a window and knows the truth.
Anacostia now finds Raelle crying by a tree. Raelle tells Anacostia that she still loves Scylla. Anacostia consoles her and says that Scylla loves her too. Raelle tells Anacostia that they told Petra about Scylla being on campus. Anacostia then tells the Bellweather Unit about what Adler did to the President. She then tells the girls if Adler can trace this back to them, they are all in danger.
Will Adler find out? Will Petra get to Adler first? Are the girls in danger? Who is more dangerous, Adler, or the Spree?
