Episode 307 of Netflix’s Castlevania explores the plans of bad, mad monks.

The previous Castlevania episode involved an elaborate dream sequence by Saint Germain (Bill Nighy), plus we got to know FlysEyes (Gildart Jackson), a night creature loyal to Isaac (Adetokumboh M’Cormack). Episode 307 gets back to Alucard (James Callis) and his new associates, Sumi (Rila Fukushima) and Taka (Toru Uchikado).

In addition to battle training, they are interested in the magical engine used to move Alucards castle — a castle that used to belong to Dracula (Graham McTavish). Alucard also shows them the Belmont’s treasure trove of knowledge, and also mentions the Parthian battery.  Also known as the “Baghdad battery,” it is often considered the oldest known electric battery in existence.

Castlevania: Lindenfeld and beyond

Back in Lindenfeld, a curious Saint Germain asks the mysterious Sala (Navid Negahban) about a book on occult magic. He mentions that the section about returning people from hell has been ripped out.

Sala muses that it must have been used for toilet paper, which likely hits Germain as an unsatisfactory answer. Meanwhile, Trevor (Richard Armitage) and Sypha (Alejandra Reynoso) get in a major fight with some of Sala’s priory monks.

Trevor actually kills one and stuffs him into a barrel. However, he’s careful enough to keep the other one alive to ask him questions. Sypha alludes to some dark plans involving magic. By the episode’s end, we see a weird night creature crucified in the basement, most likely with some sinister magical intent.

It is likely that Sala is behind this, but it’s been strongly implied that he may himself be possessed by an evil force (although, oddly enough, the force is somewhat civil, slow and deliberate).

Isaac rolls into town

Isaac finds a lone figure in an abandoned village. Her name is Miranda (scream queen Barbara Steele). She tells Isaac that the neighboring village has been enslaved by a magician. When Isaac tells her he’s going to Styria because he has people to kill there, she seems to offer her assistance in finding him a transmission mirror.

With that, he may be able to instantly transmit himself and his loyal army of night creatures to Styria.  This episode does not reveal many details about this new magician, although she does come across as shifty.  Then again, so is Isaac.

What this episode lacks

This isn’t a serious critique of the episode, but it obviously does not have key characters. For example, there’s no attention paid to Hector (Theo James) and his relationship with Lenore (Jessica Brown Findlay). Nor is there attention paid to Carmilla (Jaime Murray) and her plans to keep humans as cattle for herself and her sisters.

Castlevania also lets The Captain (Lance Reddick) sit this one out, even though it seems we just got to know him a few episodes ago. However, with the truth about the Lindenfeld monks gradually getting revealed, it seems like more action is just around the corner.
