Amazon Prime is developing a standalone Lisbeth Salander series.

Fans of Stieg Larsson’s Millenium book series know very well who Lisbeth Salander is, a character that has captivated the hearts of many.

Played by several different actresses in multiple incarnations of the series, the books will now move to a new medium with an Amazon Prime Video television series, Variety exclusively reports.

The new Lisbeth Salander series will be an entirely new story.

The award-winning Swedish crime novels have already been adapted several times for Swedish and American audiences. The first three books by Larsson were adapted into three Swedish films, and then David Fincher teamed up with Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig for an American adaptation.

More from Amazon Prime

After a few years of quiet, another American film was made starring Claire Foy as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a book written by David Lagercrantz, who took over the series after Larsson’s death.

Interestingly enough, the Amazon Prime series will go in a new direction by not adapting a book. The article indicates that the show will put Lisbeth Salander into a brand new setting with an untold story set in the modern world.

However, somewhat confusingly, the show is titled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, at least tentatively.

I understand the producers will likely want the name-brand recognition but if they’replanning to move away from the books as their primary source, then they should probably just name the show “Lisbeth” or something else or people might anticipate another adaptation.

I would be curious to see a brand new story, but I remained disappointed that we never got to see Fincher’s take on the rest of the series with Mara as Lisbeth. Currently, no actresses are attached to the project.
