Barkskins Season 1, Episode 3 recap: Mari takes action
Trepagny gives René a new assignment: to clear out the trees for his impressive new “sky table,” which seems to be similar to the modern-day skyscraper, based on his idea. He also gets all excited about his new wife but demands René keep it to himself and not tell Mari.
The only problem is, Mari already knows, and she makes her unhappiness known. When Trepagny visits her that night he says it would be best if he no longer slept in her bed. He tries to console her with a dance, but Mari spits on him and refuses to help him clean up before she storms out.
She seeks support from René but he’s trying to do the “honorable” thing and remain loyal to his boss, meaning he just wants Mari to leave him alone so he doesn’t get dragged down into their weird relationship drama.
Pissed off and desperate, Mari breaks into Trepagny’s contemplation room and steals several of his precious ritualistic items. She takes them into the woods and buries them in the ground. In the process, she finds a small white caterpillar. I tried to figure out what this meant, as it did not come up in the next episode. A metaphor for something?
Barkskins Season 1, Episode 3 recap: Charles finds a new boss
Remember the runaway Charles? Well, he’s still being held captive except even the Wendat don’t want him so he’s tossed back out into the wild.
Charles makes it back to Wobik where he crosses paths with Elisha Cooke visiting his dead wife’s grave. He begs Cooke to give him a job, any job. Cooke initially blows him off. But then he stumbles across a lost and confused Thom.
Not knowing what to do with Thom just yet, Cooke hides him in a wooden shed and tells him to wait. Then Marth returns, towing Lafarge’s body behind him. He strings up the corpse outside the Wobik gates and calls for Cooke to come “get his man.”
Knowing Lafarge is dead and Thom could tell someone about the plan to kidnap the priest and Rendardette, Cooke finally comes up with the perfect job for Charles. he instructs him to kill Thom.
Charles takes Thom out into the woods and forces him to walk in front of him with a knife by his side, but we don’t see whether or not he goes through with the deed just yet.
Barkskins Season 1, Episode 3 recap: Melissande and Delphine find husbands
Mother Sabrine and the fille du roi are getting ready for the matchmaker dance where they will choose their husbands. Melissande is still intent on finding the man with the most land, while Delphine is just worried about finding someone nice. She doesn’t want to end up like Claudette.
At the matchmaking dance, Trepagny has eyes for Delphine, but Melissande quickly intercedes. By the end of the night, she is set to marry Trepagny, and Delphine will marry a man named Pierre.
In the final moments of the episode, Renardette emerges from a wooden hutch at Mathilde’s inn, surprising her.
“My little fox, you’ve returned to me.”
