Barkskins Season 1, Episode 4 recap: The Law of Two

Members of the Iroquois are seen rowing a boat near Wobik where they slowly cut down their dead, likely to give them a proper burial.

While attending to their dead, Father Gabriel arrives on the dock to spend some time alone with his… bread? The Iroquois knock him out and toss him in the water.

Father Jerome and the other priests arrive later to search for Gabriel, they immediately suspect the Iroquois is behind it since they removed all the bodies from the tree. Bouchard doesn’t believe them at first until they find his waterlogged bible floating nearby.

René happens to stumble across the Iroquois with their captive. He tries to outrun them but he gets shot with an arrow and it slows him down. Ultimately he pauses to tend to his wound and gets knocked unconscious by one of the tribe members.

Barkskins Season 1, Episode 4 recap: Mathilde and Renardette

A newly widowed Mathilde has a new set of problems to deal with now that Francis is dead. A Man named Herve Gasquet has a thing for her and despite her repeatedly rejecting his advances, he persists.

Mathilde also has a new role to play as the resident pot-stirrer. Without Lafarge around, she can spill his dirty secrets. She uses her pull to mess with Bouchard’s head and give him enough information to go after Cooke. She convinces him to run Cooke out of town to retain order in Wobik.

At one point, Herve attempts to assault Mathilde, but she manages to fend him off. Renardette witnessed the entire incident from her hutch. She apparently takes Mathilde’s message about the two of them being able to handle everything themselves without a man, as at the end of the episode, she sneaks up behind Herve and stabs him.
