Barkskins Season 1, Episode 4 recap: Charles and Cooke

Cooke, Charles, and Lafarge’s wife hold a brief burial for him,  although she doesn’t seem super cut up about his death. She does want to know what happened to Thom.

Things don’t go that well for Cooke in this episode however, as Mathilde’s words take root in Bouchard and he arrests the Englishman. He forces Cooke to spend the night in the fiddle,  sending him out in the courtyard for people to stare at.

We also learn that Charles did not kill Thom as he said. Instead, he hid Thom in the woods and then gave him money and forced him to run away by following the river to Quebec.

Surprisingly, Charles does return to Cooke by episode’s end, perhaps he does want in on the barrel trade.

Barkskins Season 1, Episode 4 recap: Hamish and Yvon

Hamish and Yvon leave Wobik, for now, to visit with company leader Captain Wale. He pretty much echoes everything Cooke said about Cross being sent to the area. Hamish just wants to know if the massacre was Cross’s idea or if someone higher-up orchestrated it.

Wale doesn’t really give him a straight answer but encourages the men to work with Cooke together. He’s happy the French settlers are gone, regardless. He also wants Hamish and Yvon to convince the Iroquois to rebel against the French. If they do, he promises they will be supplied with everything they need by the HBC.

Barkskins Season 1, Episode 4 recap: Melissande and Delphine

As for Delphine and Melissande, Melissande spends the episode getting acquainted with Trepagny. She is brought to his doma and seems to be rather underwhelmed by everything.  She’s certainly not happy to learn about Mari and insists that Trepagny ensure she knows her place.

Things come to a bit of a halt in Mari’s story as she spends the majority of the episode tending to an injuring Henri Marth. However, at the end of the episode, she peers up at the chateau window where Melissande and Trepagny are spending the night together. She looks extremely unhappy.

Delphine’s storyline is a little more interesting in this episode. She and Pierre get to know each other a little and then move to spend their wedding night together in bed. Delphine becomes increasingly nervous and reluctant.

Finally, Pierre tells her to take off her dress. Delphine complies and something Pierre sees on her body turns him off completely, but the show doesn’t reveal what yet.
