Locke and Key Season 2: Which keys might we see next?

It might still be a while before we see Locke and Key Season 2 arrive on Netflix, but we’ve already started considering what keys we’d like to see show up from the graphic novel series the show is based on.

Most diehard fans know how long and arduous the journey from page-to-screen has been for the series, and now we finally have at least one season released. But when will we get Locke and Key Season 2?

Thanks to the television production shutdowns, it’s not likely to arrive until at least 2021, unfortunately. Digital Spy echoed our sentiments by estimating mid-2021 at the earliest. At least that gives us plenty of time to think about what could come next on the show!

Locke and Key Season 2: Mild graphic novels spoilers ahead.

The following list of keys are present in the graphic novels the series is based on, if you don’t want any potential spoilers for the show, turn back now.

More from Netflix

5. Angel Key

The Angel Key is a favorite of fans as it allows the wearer to use massive angel wings attached to a harness to fly and even carry a considerable amount of weight. It might be one of the trickier keys to adapt into the series due to the CGI required.

Some people did not like how the ghosts looked in Season 1, and the Angel Key would undoubtedly require a green screen at the very least.

4. Timeshift Key

The Timeshift Key is easily one of the essential keys in the series. Not only that, but it would be simple for Netflix to introduce it into the show. While some keys will require extensive CGI, the Timeshift Key would just need to transport characters back in time.

In the books, the Timeshift Key is pivotal to revealing the entire backstory of the keys and how Harland Locke initially created them. In Season 1, a lot of the critical exposition and info dump surrounding Rendell Locke and the Keeper of the Keys came via Ellie and the Head Key.

While it was informative, it would be better if we could watch the Harland and the Tamers of the Tempest discover the Black Door in 1988. An episode dedicated to Kinsey and Tyler being sent back in time to witness all of this would be a great way to start the second season and provide much-needed background information.

3. Hercules Key

Like the Angel Key, the Hercules Key is a fan-favorite and one that would require some CGI to make it work.

That said, Netflix’s version of Locke and Key is probably going to have to compromise with at least one or the other, if not both, as fans are itching to see their depictions on-screen. Using the Hercules Key makes the user grow giant-sized.

2. Animal Key

The Animal Key would probably be the next easiest key to adapt on-screen apart from the Timeshift Key, especially if they keep things simple by using birds or other small animals that are either easily trained or digitally rendered.

Sort of similar to the Ghost Key, the Animal Key opens a door, and when you walk through it, you turn into an animal. It actually becomes pretty important in the final chapters of the comics to save Bode. I imagine that some form of this key will be introduced to the show.

1. Alpha Key

It is almost guaranteed that the Alpha Key will be introduced into the Netflix show, although it might not be until later in the series since it isn’t created in the comics until the last volume. However, the Netflix show already foreshadowed the Alpha Key in the Season 1 finale.

Toward the end of the episode, Tyler leaves to go fishing with Jackie, and you’ll notice he’s wearing a hat from Rendell with a lure attached to it. I won’t reveal too much more here, but the comic fans know how important that hat is to the story and the eventual introduction of the Alpha Key.

With the Alpha Key, people who are possessed by demons can have their souls saved — for a price.

Locke and Key Season 2: Read the comics in the meantime.

While waiting for the next season, I strongly recommend buying the comics or borrowing them from a friend or your local library if you can.

They’re an excellent series, well worth reading, and it will make watching the show more enjoyable for you, although there are some stark differences. If you do read the graphic novels, keep in mind that they are much darker, gorier, and generally more horrifying than the Netflix series.
