Harlots canceled after three seasons at Hulu

HARLOTS -- Set against the backdrop of 18th century Georgian London, Harlots continues to follow the fortunes of the Wells family. Set a year after the dramatic events of Season 2, Margaret (Samantha Morton) has been sent to America in chains and Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) is vanquished and in Bedlam. It seems that the Wells girls can finally free themselves of their motherÕs feud, helped by allies such as Lady Fitz (Liv Tyler). But Charlotte Wells (Jessica Brown-Findlay) soon learns that running a lucrative brothel brings enemies as well as friends, including new pimp in town Isaac Pincher (Alfie Allen). Harlots Season 4 will not be happening at Hulu.

Nine months after the third season of Harlots aired on Hulu, the streaming service has officially confirmed that there will not be a Harlots Season 4. TVLine has confirmed that the series is coming to an end after only three seasons.

Harlots was a treasure among the many Hulu originals, so it is disappointing to realize we won’t be getting any more episodes. The show was set against an 18th-century Gregorian London backdrop and followed characters who worked at brothels in the area. The stories were even based on real women.

The first season primarily focused on two women leading warring brothels, but it quickly grew into something far more than that. It was a smart, feminist, and hilarious series that will be sorely missed.

Could Harlots Season 4 air on another service?

It’s not yet clear if Harlots could be revived elsewhere, but fans are passionately asking for it to happen already on social media. Many people have started social media campaigns to save the series already, as some felt it was never adequately promoted by Hulu.

The odds don’t look great, however, as the series was produced in conjunction with ITV.

Since ITV and Hulu both agreed to cancel it, that means neither party was willing to take on the series by itself. If ITV wanted to exit the deal, then Hulu could have picked it up full-time, but as that is not the case, it’s hard to imagine it being rescued by Netflix.

Other potential options would be Amazon Prime, who has aired several British programs before, or even Acorn TV.

However, the long waiting period between the end of season three and this announcement makes me think the project might be dead in the water.

The streaming service has also canceled the Abigal Spencer-led thriller series Reprisal.
