The Woods Season 1, Episode 5 Recap: Your Sister is Dead

The Woods Season 1: Pawel’s life is unraveling by the second.

When we last left The Woods Season 1, Pawel’s life was falling apart. There is evidence that he killed his wife. His sister-in-law has been arrested for embezzling money and he doesn’t know it yet, but Arthur wrote Pawel’s name in blood before he died. The Netflix Original The Woods Season 1 is giving us all of the twists and turns and we are here for it!

We start back with Pawel’s sister-in-law being arrested. The media is already all over it. Pawel drives to her house but does not get out of the car. He is already getting phone calls from the media. He calls someone to tell them he knows who is doing this to them. We all know it has to be Krzysztof. As it turns out, he is the one that is broadcasting it on the TV. So, he gets to write the narrative.

Pawel goes to his office and talks to his partner about how they still moving forward with the case, even after all of this. He says this girl, Klaudia, reminds him of Kamila.

We travel back to 1994. Young Pawel is in his apartment. He sees his father again outside with a shovel. He goes to look for Kamila each night. He brings a flashlight, a map, and a shovel and digs around the woods. Will he find anything? Pawel goes to watch him dig. Only, his father is on to Pawel being in the woods.

We now see Adult Pawel talking to his boss. His boss threatens to follow certain procedures due to the complaint filed against Pawel for intimidating a witness. But, she walks over to the shredder and shreds the complaint. She tells him that next time she won’t be so nice.

We then go to young Pawel and his father. Reporters are calling their house to ask about Malczak’s arrest. Pawel is also finding out for the first time that his mother has left them.

We then see Lubelski looking at crime scene photos with Malczak. Lubelski is tormenting him to confess the locations of the bodies. Malczak knows Lubelski wants to pin these murders on him.

Adult Pawel is now at a prison. He goes to see Malczak. Pawel is asking him about what happened in the woods. Malczak says he has had a visitor recently. It was someone digging for dirt on Pawel. Malczak says that he didn’t give them any information and also claims that he didn’t kill anyone in the woods in 1994. Malczak knows more than he is letting onto and knows that Arthur didn’t die that night.

Pawel and Laura are now trying to put a theory together. They think that Arthur’s parents knew what happened and helped him hide all this time. But it doesn’t explain who killed him now and why. Laura says that there has to be someone else. Just then, Pawel gets a phone call.

He drives to an open area and walks towards a man. This is Kuba, Pawel’s brother-in-law. Kuba admits that his wife did take 100,000 from the foundation. He wants Pawel to say that he let her have it. After Kuba explains why the took the money, they piece together that Arthur’s “girlfriend,” Ming Lee, framed them all.

What was the point of all of this? What did Ming Lee have in it?

The inspector is going over all of the details of Arthur’s murder and isn’t buying that Pawel is guilty. He thinks the evidence is too clean and he would be right!

The Woods Season 1: Hypothetical situations seem to be more fact than fiction.

Arthur’s dad shows up at Pawel’s office. He wants to talk about hypothetical situations, but we know he wants to talk about the truth. He is afraid that they can be sued for obstruction of justice and for filing a false claim. He also says that Arthur did not kill anybody that night but doesn’t know who did.

We are back at the coroner’s office. She is still working on the bones that were found near the camp. She is putting some things together, but we aren’t sure what yet.

Pawel is driving with his daughter and he calls Laura. He wants to meet with David.

Laura is at Pawel’s place and they are talking about the conversation that Pawel had with Arthur’s father. Laura is skeptical. Laura’s father agreed to meet with David.

The coroner shows up at Pawel’s office. She tells Pawel that the bones belong to a woman. She also now knows that the victim was strangled, but the victim was in her 40s. So this can’t be Pawel’s sister.

Pawel meets with his assistant. She tells him that there is a video for his case and they know who took it. Klaudia didn’t tell them originally because she loves this person and has been trying to protect him this whole time.

Pawel then gets a tip to go to a certain location. He is walking around and notices that there are security cameras there. He uses these cameras to go back and watch cars in the area. He finally sees the car that moved Arthur’s body. Who does it belong to?

He brings this footage to the inspector. The inspector agrees to check it out.

Laura drives Pawel out to see her father. He says he wants to ask David about why his mother left. When getting out of the car, Pawel and Laura kiss. Laura then says that she loves Pawel. We have been waiting for this!

Pawel meets David and starts asking him questions. David says that Pawel’s parent’s relationship fell apart after Kamila’s death. Pawel tells David that Kamila did not die that summer and neither did Arthur. He then tells David that Arthur visited him under a different name. He wants to know what Arthur wanted with David.

At the same time, the inspectors find out that the car used to move Arthur’s body belonged to David.

While Laura waits for Pawel, she goes and sits in her father’s car and finds the blood. She gets out and rushes to go find Pawel and her father.

We flashback to 1994. Pawel is running through the woods after someone. Pawel comes upon David and Malczak having an intimate interaction with each other. We then learn that it was David that ran him off the road and told him to never tell about him and Malczak.

Present-day Pawel then presses David for more information and David pulls a gun out. They wrestle and then the gun goes off. Laura starts running toward them. This is the barrel we saw Pawel staring at in the first episode. They both keep fighting with each other and the gun goes off again. Laura gets to them before David kills Pawel. David tells Pawel that his sister is dead and then commits suicide.

How does David know she is dead? Who else was in the woods that night? What did Arthur want with David and why did David kill Arthur? How does Ming Lee fit into all of this? How is this going to all come together with only one episode of The Woods Season 1 left?
