The Politician Season 3? Yes, please!

The Politician Season 3 is not a reality just yet, but boy, I would sure love another installment of this wacky, creative Ryan Murphy series. Netflix has not given any such confirmation that we will get another season of this political satire, but it’s only been a handful of days since the second season premiered.

The coronavirus pandemic has put a hold on a lot of things, including production of television shows and films, so if there is a third season, we probably wouldn’t see anything for a while.

What would The Politician Season 3 be about?

If you’ve been watching the series from the get-go, you are well aware that the heart of the show lies with its central character, Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), and his desire to enter the world of politics. While the first season is centered on his high school campaign, the second season puts him out in the real world as he campaigns for a New York Senate seat.

Given where Season 2 ends, I think The Politician Season 3 has set the perfect stage for Payton’s political journey to continue, especially with that time jump. Throughout the second season, Payton has to fight hard and dirty as he goes up against incumbent Dede Standish (Judith Light) for the Senate seat and her Chief of Staff Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler).

But by the time all is said and done and through some very weird twists and turns, Payton ends up winning the Senate Seat and Dede ends up joining Georgina’s (Gwyneth Paltrow) presidential campaign as her Vice President.

Georgina is Payton’s mother and somehow wrangles the opportunity to become the first female President, but with her plan to only run one term, she wants Dede to take over for her after. And Dede asks Payton to join the race with her when she does.

So, long story short? A potential The Politician Season 3 would lead us straight to the White House, folks! Thank goodness for that time jump.

Who would return for The Politician Season 3?

I think we can all but assume that Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Judith Light, and Bette Midler would most certainly return. Their involvement with a potential third season would be a must especially given the way Season 3 ended.

I can already see all the shenanigans that would ensue as this group of wacky characters makes room for itself in the most important house in America. Of course, along for the ride would probably be Payton’s wife Alice (Julia Schlaepfer), BFF/political team McAfee (Laura Dreyfuss), James (Theo Germaine), Skye (Rahne Jones), and potentially Astrid (Lucy Boynton).

Netflix is known to be a little all over the place when it comes to renewals. Usually, they give a show or its subsequent seasons at least four weeks to make a decision. They gauge how many people viewed the show from start to finish within that first month and go from there. But again, we don’t always hear about renewals or cancellations right away. For example, within the first month of its third season, Santa Clarita Diet was canceled while Lucifer’s second season on Netflix was renewed before the one month mark.

Given we’re only a few days into the premiere of the second season of The Politician, we still have some time ahead of us before an official decision is made, one way or the other. But something tells me that Ryan Murphy’s overall deal with Netflix will likely keep this series going.
