The Twilight Zone Season 2, Episode 4 recap: “Ovation”

What would happen if you found a magical coin gifting you with fame and endless applause? Jurnee Smollet portrays a character who must contend with such a fate. In The Twilight Zone Season 2, Episode 4, Smollet plays a struggling singer named Jasmine.

Most people ignore Jasmine until she happens to meet a world-famous singer named Fiji (Sky Ferriera). Fiji gifts Jasmine with a strange coin and then kills herself by stepping in front of a bus.

At her memorial service, Jasmine performs a song and gets noticed by J.J. Malloy (Thomas Lennon), the host of the famous singing competition Ovation. Malloy invites Jasmine to audition for the show. She barely begins to sing, and already the crowd is on their feet applauding her.

As you might expect, things begin to take a sinister turn when it appears people cannot stop applauding for Jasmine. An Uber driver almost crashes the car when her song plays on the radio, surgeons stop mid-surgery, even a guy under anesthesia starts clapping!

So Jasmine relinquishes the coin to her sister, Zara, in the hopes she can go back to a normal life, even if that means struggling.
