Stateless Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: The Circumstances in Which They Come

Stateless Episode 1: How do three strangers end up meeting?

The Netflix series Stateless begins with a girl running through an endless desert. Who is she running from? Where is she running to?

Then, it looks like we go back in time and see this same girl, Sofie, as a flight attendant at an airport.  We quickly see some families in other countries, but then back to Sofie.

It looks like Sofie flew to see her family for Christmas.

We change locations and see a man named Ameer and his family looking for a hotel to stay in. Upon arriving at their hotel, they receive a room with others already in it with no lock on the door.

We return to Sofie, talking to her family about her travels. Her overbearing mother makes her comments about Sofie’s job.

We then cut back to Ameer’s family again. They are able to find someone, Farid, that can give them a place to stay.

Meanwhile, we switch back to Sofie, and she becomes overwhelmed by the discussions around her family’s table. Her sister comes to aid in the bathroom, but Sofie has left out of the window.

Farid brings Ameer and his family into the building, where they are met with a large group. The group’s leader asks for money for safe passage on a boat out of the country to Australia.

We briefly see a third family in yet another location, Cam’s family.

Sofie is out drinking and driving in her car. She puts on a dress and ends up at a group dance. There are two people up on the stage dancing, Gordon and Pat Masters. This is a group for people who need to work on opening up called GOPA.

Gordon Masters make a grand speech about finding yourself and letting yourself be free. He then walks up and even introduces himself to Sofie.

We then go back to Ameer. His family is safe and living with the people from the boat deal. They are planning their trip to Australia. While they are planning, they figure out that Ameer’s youngest daughter has a fever.

We then see Sofie at a dance class at GOPA.

Now we are with Cam’s family. Cam is with his newborn baby and looks like he is short on money. He walks past a bar and his friends invite him in. They all work for immigration and joke that he should apply for a job.

Sofie is now in a session with Gordon and Pat. We like the idea of their group, but they seem a little on the untrustworthy side. Nevertheless, Sofie opens up about a time where she won an ice-skating final, but her parents were not there because they were too busy celebrating her sister’s test score.

Sofie begins to unravel and lets out all of her true emotions. We go back to the group, and Pat is announcing parts to a performance. Sofie gets to be the lead dancer.

Right after Sofie gets this news, we find out her sister, Margot, is at the door waiting for her. Margot confronts her about the program, and Sofie finally tells Margot all of her feelings.

We go back to Ameer and his family. People are yelling that it is time. They grab their bags but realize the youngest is missing. They find her in the pool, then they all get on a bus. They are about to board the boat to Australia.

It turns out to be a scam. The bus takes all of their papers and money and drives away. The people are then forced to run from the police.

Meanwhile, in Australia, Cam is starting immigration school.

Stateless Season 1: Sofie’s life is about to change.

Sofie arrives late to her job at the airport, and after being confronted, she decides to quit. She goes to Pat and Gordon to say she will find a way to pay them, but they say they don’t need payment.

Gordon then goes into a room with Sofie. She says how she feels happy about leaving her job. Gordon asks what she wants, and she says she wants love. We see him take off her scarf, and we have a feeling something else may have occurred.

We then go to the show, Sofie is nearly in tears as she begins her dance. She keeps unraveling as she dances, and we see glimpses of what happened in the room with Gordon.

When Sofie begins to breakdown in the middle of the dance, Gordon gets up and humiliates her in front of everyone. It is clear that Pat knows what is going on. He then proceeds to kick Sofie out of the group.

Sofie is now out in the middle of the streets, completely distraught. The police find her and bring her into the station, where her sister comes to talk to her. Margot tells her that in the morning, she will bring her to a doctor.

Ameer and his family safely make it to a market where he begins to beg and search for food to feed his sick daughter. Ameer’s wife knows that they need a doctor.

He steals a knife from the market and goes to the first place they looked for a hotel room. He finds the man that collected the money from the boat, and he is running another scam.

Ameer tells everyone not to do business with them, and the people scatter. Ameer and his friend steal the money box and run away.

Meanwhile, Sofie overhears her parents and sister talking about her. Again she can’t handle it and goes into the ocean and just starts swimming.

Ameer finds his family a boat, but upon the boat taking off, they are ambushed. His family gets away, but he is taken.

Cam is arriving at his immigration compound. They have their first busload of people arrive. He collects their names and their id numbers. To our surprise, on this bus is Sofie going by the name of Eva.

What is Sofie doing there? Does Ameer’s family make it safely to Australia? Is Ameer ok?
