Episode 203 of Netflix’s After Life has the Gazette out of danger (for now).

Episode 204 of After Life begins with Tony (Ricky Gervais) visited by Roxy (Roisin Conaty). When Postman Pat (Joe Wilkinson) shows up, he tells them to leave. It seems a bit anti-climactic but offers insight into Tony’s mood.

Then, against his better judgment, Tony’s brother-in-law and boss, Matt (Tom Basden), visits his unprofessional therapist (Paul Kaye). He tells Matt that females choose mates based on their strength and that being himself won’t help Matt find a new partner. He even tells him to lie, cheat, and “be a man.”

Next, Tony interviews a woman addicted to plastic surgery (Holli Dempsey), including botox and implants. Even though the surgeon kept botched his job, she kept going back. She admits to having an addiction but Tony can’t tell if she’s laughing or crying.

More from Netflix

In another sad scene, Kath (Diane Morgan) gets rejected by Matt again — though it probably qualifies as sexual harassment on her part by this point. It prompts Matt to ask Tony to threaten to kill himself, so Matt has an excuse to prevent her from asking him on a date.

After Life and Boy who cried wolf?

For obvious reasons, Tony doesn’t like Matt’s suggestion. Tony compares it to the Boy Who Cried Wolf fable; If he keeps announcing he’s suicidal as a joke, people will stop taking him seriously if he really does become suicidal.

To that, Matt comes up with a rebuttal of the fable.  Basically, the boy admitted it was a lie and kept doing it. Matt offers the counter-moral: Never admit you were lying and use different lies each time. It’s a pretty funny moment from After Life, though it might go over some people’s heads.

Tony and Kath

After a scene where Tony encourages his dementia-affected dad (David Bradley) to call Simon (Bill Ward) a rude word, Tony offers to take a saddened Kath out for coffee. He tells Kath she was just being honest about her feelings toward Matt. Nevertheless, it is starting to get obsessive, and there’s a sense that Kath should move on already. What is that saying? They’re just not into you.

Saving the paper

This episode of After Life has a few more key moments. Tony tells Anne (Penelope Wilton) of the graveyard that he’s sad all the time now. Also, Tony watches an old video of Lisa (Kerry Godliman) mentioning a hospital worker who had awful body odor, but she held back from criticizing it because he worked so hard.

However, the big moment is when Tony convinces Paul (Peter Egan) to not close the Tambury Gazette. He agrees, on Tony’s condition that he can sell it next year if they fail. Now Sandy (Mandeep Dhillon) has more reason to be happy, as well as anyone else who sees value in the paper.
