Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to explore the characters’ inner journeys.

At San Diego Comic Con@Home, the cast and crew of Star Trek: Discovery and its spin-off, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds gathered from their homes to discuss their respective shows. And attendees got a little insight into what kinds of journeys Strange New Worlds will explore through its characters.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Where Will the Characters Be Going?

Ethan Peck, who portrays Spock on Discovery, and will reprise his role on Strange New Worlds, spoke about how the character’s experience on Discovery will impact his arc in the upcoming show.

Spock was revealed to be Michael Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) brother, and though the two were shown to have a tumultuous relationship at first, by the end of Season two of the show, they had become closer and relied on each other for emotional support.

And this closeness will have changed the way Spock experiences the world and accepts himself, said Peck at the panel.

As a half-Vulcan, half-human, Spock was shown to be struggling with his identity, and having been raised on Vulcan, he rejected his human self. But his time with Burnham has brought him closer to his human side, explained Peck, and will be a steppingstone to him becoming the Spock fans know and love in the original Star Trek series.

Anson Mount, who portrayed Captain Pike on Discovery, will also be reprising his role on Strange New Worlds.

Mount explained that Pike, who had seen his bleak future, will be struggling with the knowledge he has learned about himself. Knowing that his ending will not be peaceful or kind to him, Mount said, would be very taxing on Pike. “There’s a reason why we only know our past, and not our future,” said Mount.

The show will also explore how Pike decides to move forward, and how he can best utilize his life for the betterment of the universe. He will also struggle with allowing people to learn about his future and help him deal with it.

Rebecca Romijn, who plays Number One on Strange New Worlds, added that Pike will also be trying to figure out how to handle the unknown and work as a team. According to Mount, the first season of the show will see Pike learning to become more of a team player despite knowing his future.

During a later panel during SDCC@Home, Star Trek novelist Una McCormack shared that Number One’s first name, Una, is an homage to her. McCormack has several Star Trek novels to her name, including Picard: The Last Best Hope.

From the panel discussions during the convention it seems that Strange New Worlds is set to be an exploration of not just the wider galaxy but also the worlds within the characters.
