What can fans look forward to in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3?
It’s a very different SDCC this year, but the virtual panels have given more people the chance to attend the comic con. The cast and crew of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 came together for a table read of the finale of Season 2, before diving into fan questions about what to expect from the next season.
Cast members who will be returning for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 include Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Hugh Culber), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Michelle Yeoh (Georgiou), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Emily Coutts (Detmer), Oyin Oladejo (Owosekun), Patrick Kwok-Choon (Rhys), Ronnie Rowe (Bryce), and Sara Mitich (Nilsson).
Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 cast on their characters.
The majority of the Discovery crew chose to join Michael as she took the ship into the future, in an effort to find and rescue her mother. In Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Michael is hoping to land safely and take them to the correct location. She’s also looking for salvation because the crew has sacrificed everything for her, and they hope the plan to defeat Control has worked and they have saved the universe.
Doug Jones spoke about Saru having to abandon his beloved sister and his homeworld for a second time. He has a feeling good about the Kelpians’ future and, for him, going into the future is a tough task. Considering he was acting captain aboard the Discovery for a while, we wonder how Saru will cope with his Starfleet aspirations being dashed again.
Another ambitious character is Ensign Tilly. She’s had her eye on the Captain’s chair, but those plans have changed. Wiseman has said that Tilly will continue to look for leadership opportunities in the third season, which will be part of her journey.
Like Saru, Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor/ Captain Georgiou has also been displaced for the second time. She was pulled out of the Mirror Universe, to be stranded in the Prime timeline, and now she’s stuck in the future. In Yeoh’s words, Georgiou is ‘really p***ed off’! But, if there’s one thing we know about this character, it’s that she’s resourceful. Georgiou always finds a way to adapt, and according to Yeoh, even though she will be angry she will find her way around. She doesn’t even seek power because it’s something that’s part of her.
Finally, the OTP of Star Trek, Wilson Cruz’s Hugh Culber and Anthony Rapp’s Paul Stamets is back to being a couple again. Culber was set to take a position on the Enterprise before being called on to save his partner’s life. Now he’s a different person, his work as a doctor has changed and so has his relationship with Stamets. Cruz has hinted that he loves the new Culber, which means this character is finally going to be fleshed out and given more screen time.
Rapp reiterated the sense of family that the show will focus on. The Discovery crew really doesn’t have anybody but each other to rely on, so we can imagine their camaraderie will be similar to that of Star Trek: Voyager which also featured a ship and crew lost in space.
The cast also spoke about the need for Star Trek, as a franchise, to continue expanding the diversity of characters featured in its properties. As Mary Chieffo said, ‘the work isn’t done yet’, but with Star Trek: Discovery especially, the franchise has made leaps to embrace the many gender and sexual identities of the real world.
While no release date has been revealed as yet, Rapp mentioned on social media that filming for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 has completed, and post-production is underway. We could possibly be seeing more of these characters very soon.
