By Monita Mohan
Who’s joining the cast in His Dark Materials Season 2?
The hit television adaptation of Philip Pullman’s series is back for a second round. At SDCC@Home, the cast, executive producer and show writer shared what fans can expect from His Dark Materials Season 2. With so much expectation surrounding the show from the book series’ loyal fans, the showrunners have a lot to live up to. The first trailer of the next season should pique their interests.
The trailer features new cast members Andrew Scott (John Parry), Jade Anouka (Ruta Skadi), and Simone Kirby (Dr. Mary Malone). It was separately revealed that Terrence Stamp would be joining His Dark Materials Season 2 as Giacomo Paradisi. During the SDCC panel, Scott announced that the second season will see him reunite with his Fleabag colleague, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Bridge will be voicing Parry’s dæmon, Sayan Kötör.
What to expect in His Dark Materials Season 2?
In the trailer, we catch our first glimpse of the mysterious city of Cittàgaze where Dafne Keen’s Lyra and Amir Wilson’s Will meet. Returning to the show will be Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter), Ariyon Bakare (Lord Boreal) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby).
Executive producer Jane Tranter explained that the main seven episodes of the next season had already been filmed before the lockdowns began. The only episode remaining was a standalone episode about Lord Asriel (James McAvoy). For now, production of that one episode is on hold, but Dark Materials Season 2 is scheduled to go ahead.
When the show returns, Lyra is alone, without all the people who she considered her family. She and Will form a friendship, which readers will be familiar with from the books. Both characters are displaced from their own worlds, and it looks like they’ll have to rely on each other.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Lee Scoresby shares a lot of screen time with Scott’s John Parry. From the trailer, he’s in a bad way and he’s struggling with being on a different world from Lyra. He definitely wants her back. During the panel, Miranda talked about his love for the book series and what a dream it was for him to be part of the show.
In His Dark Materials Season 2, Mrs. Coulter’s journey is about self-discovery, because she’s on her own a lot, and spends time with her dæmon monkey.
His Dark Materials Season 2 is scheduled to debut on BBC and HBO Max in the Fall. You can watch the first season on HBO Max.
