The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiere recap: Right Back Where We Started
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 begins immediately after the ending of Season 1. The Hargreeves are blasted back into time, each one landing in the same back alley in Dallas, Texas, but at a different time in the past.
Five lands on November 25, 1963, the day the Soviets attack the United States. He’s confused as to why he landed in the middle of a battleground in Dallas especially since he sees all of his siblings come together to fight. Then Hazel pops up and warns Five they need to move before the nukes strike.

Just as they vanish, a giant mushroom cloud billows up into the sky with the remaining Hargreeves watching before they’re seemingly killed by the explosion.
Hazel tells Five that he and Agnes had 20 great years together before cancer got her. He also tells Five that he needs to fix the timeline since it looks like the apocalypse traveled with the Hargreeves. In ten days, it will happen again.
Before Hazel can give Five any concrete answers, a dairy truck pulls up and three mysterious gray-haired men depart. They suddenly open fire on Hazel who hands his bulletproof briefcase to Five and tells him to run. Hazel dies in the shootout and Five barely manages to escape. Thus, our story begins.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiere recap: Five tries to track down his siblings.
Without Hazel, Five doesn’t know where to begin in his hunt until he notices some tracking devices on top of a nearby radio shop called Morty’s. Inside, he meets an alien conspiracist named Elliott who thinks Five is an extraterrestrial.
Elliott is also the mysterious photographer shown in the background of each sibling’s arrival in Dallas, snapping photographs of the blue surge they leave after emerging from the portal. Through Elliott, Five learns that his siblings came to Dallas at different points across the last several years.
He also gets his first lead on Diego, as Elliott has an old newspaper clipping featuring Diego’s mugshot.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiere recap: Diego wants to stop J.F.K.’s assassination.
Diego originally shows up in Dallas on September 3, 1963. We cut to Diego at a mental hospital attending a group therapy session. He tries to pretend he’s better than he used to be and is actively trying to find the “real him” who isn’t controlled by a hero complex or a desire to put himself in opposition to his father.
In reality, it was just a pawn to try and get released from the hospital earlier so he can carry out his plan to stop John F. Kennedy from being assassinated.
He confronts his therapist and asks how long until he can get out. The answer isn’t good for Diego since he claims he won’t have his case reviewed for 90 days and the assassination is next week. He has an outburst and steals the doctor’s pen before calming down.
Later, Diego gets a visit from Five, but unfortunately, Five is not interested at all in his crazy J.F.K. plan. We learn that Diego was actually arrested for attempting to kill Lee Harvey Oswald and even though Five tells him about the apocalypse, Diego somehow has it in his mind that fixing J.F.K. will solve everything else. He also has plans to take out Hitler, too, by the way.
Ultimately, Five decides the hospital might be the best place for Diego and rats him out to the guards, revealing his escape plan and the shaved bars on his cells. Diego is sedated and put in a straitjacket, then tossed into a padded cell.
When he wakes up, he works his way out of the jacket and uses the stolen pen to pick the locka nd get out of his cell. It seems like things are going according to plan, except his shoulder is damaged from the scuffle with the guards and the three strange gray-haired dairymen show up, seemingly in search of Deigo, and start shooting everyone in their way.
Luckily, Diego and his friend/potential love interest/fellow patient Lila comes to his aid and the two escape the facility together, albeit barely.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiere recap: Klaus and Ben wind up in 1960.
Klaus and Ben’s journey in the opening episode is perhaps the most detached from the rest of the siblings. For now, they’re in 1960 and Klaus appears to be living it up in his Charles Manson-esque attire — seriously, he looks like a cult leader.
The only person he has by his side his Ben, who is still a ghost, if you recall from Season 1.
It’s a little unclear where Ben and Klaus have been spending their time, but when we catch up with them their car is breaking down and they are extremely frustrated with one another, resulting in a full-on brawl in the streets. Ben wants to return to San Francisco, while Klaus is determined to go back to Dallas.
Without a car, they take refuge in a local bar. There, Klaus learns they’re stuck until the following day when the bus for Dallas comes at 3 p.m. He takes part in a game of poker and tries to win a car that way, thinking he can use Ben to win but Ben, still mad at his brother, betrays him.
Klaus steals the keys and runs off, trying to escape a group of the random men chasing after him as he ultimately takes off in the pickup truck. The end of the episode shows Klaus being arrested.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiere recap: Vanya becomes part of a new family.
Vanya lands in October 12, 1963, and immediately gets hit by a car. When we catch up with her again later, she appears to be a live-in nanny to a classic nuclear family, complete with stay-at-home housewife Sissy, working father Carl, and a mute son named Harlan.
Vanya and Sissy seem to get along really well. At one point, the two share a cigarette while Carl is at work. Sissy talks about the dreams she used to have of being a counter girl at Neiman Marcus. She reveals she keeps money in a coffee can, just to feel like she can breathe.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiere recap: Allison gets involved in the Civil Rights Movement.
Landing in 1961, Allison lands in an unfortunate period of segregation and racism. She winds up married though and appears to be pretty happy. Both she and her husband are passionate about the civil rights movement, but her husband is pinning a lot of his hopes and dreams on Kennedy. Allison tries to warn him not to be too set on Kennedy since she obviously knows what will eventually happen.
Later, the pair visit the beauty shop where Allison works. At night, they sometimes use it as a place to meet up with their friends and fellow protestors. They are planning a sit-in and discussing the rules. Her husband wants to ensure they’re going to maintain their dignity and keep things non-violent.
Well, that promise is put to the test when a racist white business owner interrupts the meeting and tries to stir up trouble. Allison winds up throwing him out of the building, which isn’t exactly what her husband had in mind and might have created a new enemy for them.
I had to wonder why Allison didn’t simply use her power in that scene. I mean even if her husband was there, it wouldn’t have been hard to brush it off as him changing her mind if she convinced him to leave, would it?
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiere recap: Luther gets involved in an underground fight club.
Based on our introduction to Luther’s story, who landed in 1962, he is involved in some kind of underground fight club. He also has a boss of some sort, who he gives money to after he beats the other guy in the pin.
Later, he goes to a burlesque club and chats with a waitress named Autumn. Based on their interaction, I’m guessing Luther works as a bouncer at the club. He’s tasked with taking care of a potentially problematic client. Then he discovers Five in the audience and he’s not entirely thrilled to see him.
It’s evident that Luther blames his new life on Five and wonders what he’s doing there now. Five tries to tell him about the impending apocalypse in a few days but he doesn’t get the response he wants from Luther.
“I don’t give a sh*t,” he tells his brother, ending the episode and leaving Five shocked.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
