The Umbrella Academy Season 2, Episode 3 recap: The Swedish Job

The third episode of The Umbrella Academy Season 2 opens with a brief history (and musical montage) of how Klaus wound up becoming a cult leader. Soon after he and Ben landed in 1960 Dallas, he got ousted from a diner straight into the arms of a kindly old lady who fell for his charms.

From there, Klaus impressed everyone with tricks and “magic” often orchestrated with Ben’s ghostly touch. He traveled around the world to places like India and then back to California, getting more and more people invested in his cause — including the guy from jail. However, Klaus eventually got sick of the attention and has since tried to escape his followers.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2, Episode 3 recap:  Vanya starts to learn the truth.

More from Netflix

On the road away from Sissy and Carl’s farmstead, Vanya runs directly into the Swedes, who we know are targeting her. They manage to get off a few machine gun rounds before she pulls over and sprints into a cornfield.

The assassins aren’t far behind her and eventually, Vanya even comes face-to-face with one. Something inside her manages to trigger her powers, blowing all of them out of her way as she takes off into the night.

Elliott’s tracking system manages to pick up on the sound waves exhibited by Vanya’s usage of powers so Five is able to find her. She doesn’t recognize him, but he convinces her to follow him. They walk through the cornfield, a giant circle now razed to the ground from her explosion. It looks like a crop circle, how funny would it be if Vanya’s impact was what ignited some of the crop circle phenomena?

At a nearby diner, Five tells Vanya who she is, in a very brief summary that leaves out some key details — like the fact she’s the one who was responsible for the original apocalypse. He lies and said it was an asteroid. He also tells her about the incoming apocalypse and she calls Sissy to check on her.

Harlan is in the midst of a bad episode when Vanya calls. He accidentally broke the record player and is struggling without Vanya there. She promises to come back as soon as she can. Before she can finish the conversation, Five hangs up the phone telling Vanya that her friend cannot be more important than the end of the world. They need to stop what’s coming before it’s too late.
