The Umbrella Academy Season 2, Episode 5 recap: Valhalla
Episode 5 of The Umbrella Academy Season 2 opens with a montage of Pogo’s origins, beginning as part of an experiment for Reginald. Discovered as a little ape, Pogo (who is so darn cute) becomes part of Grace and Reginald’s moon project.
The opening shows Pogo’s first rocket launch, which ends in disaster. Luckily, Reginald injects him with a serum that saves his life, although I don’t know what other effects it might have had. We also learn that Grace and Reginald cared for Pogo like a child.
From there, we return to the main story in the immediate aftermath of the Majestic 12 party. Five is not grateful to Lila for helping him in his fight. He kicks her out of their little trio and tells her if he sees her again he’ll kill her. Diego isn’t too thrilled with Lila either after she left him hanging in the hallway.

Klaus and Allison aren’t faring much better as they commiserate about the state of their lives in Allison’s kitchen. She even decides to join Klaus in his day-drinking while Ben looks on in disappointment.
At Sissy and Carl’s farm, Vanya and Sissy bask in the afterglow of their night together and discuss their fantasies of leaving the farm behind and running away together somewhere with Harlan. Somewhere they can be alone and not have to deal with the Carls of the world or any other troubles.
Cut to Morty’s, Luther is now reunited with Diego and Five. Together, they discuss the fact they only have six days left to stop the impending apocalypse and the only link they have is their father. Luther, however, is not inclined to see Reginal again after he tells him he sought him out when he first arrived in Dallas and it didn’t go well.
Once he first arrived in 1962, Luther tried to return to their home and found Reginald inside. He confronted him and said he was his son from the future. Despite understanding time travel is possible, Reginald completely dismisses Luther, claiming he’s CIA or KGB. He insults Luther and says that he detest children and even if he did have them, they’d be nothing like Luther.
Regardless, Five and Diego realize what they really need to do is get the Umbrella Academy back together. With the group finally reunited at Morty’s, they can come up with a game plan for how to next approach Reginald.
Elsewhere, Lila turns up at The Handler‘s and tells her she’s been kicked out of the group but did manage to retrieve one of Diego’s knives, although she doesn’t yet know what her mother needs it for. While patching up one of Lila’s wounds, The Handler does admit she’s told a few lies, such as about the Swedes and about the Commission in general since they don’t actually know her plans.
The Handler and Lila go to the house where the Swedes are staying and drop another mission down the pipe for them. Of course, it’s not really from the Commission, but it gives them a coordinate to go after Diego.
Arriving in the forest as told, the Swedes are set up in an ambush seemingly orchestrated by the Handler. One of the brothers hits a tripwire and is instantly blown to pieces. The only thing left at the scene is Diego’s knife, setting it up to make it seem like he’s the mastermind behind the attack.
The remaining brothers mourn the death of their fallen sibling by sending his only remains — a piece of his leg — on a boat and lighting it on fire while a gorgeous Swedish cover of “Hello” by Adele plays in the background. Turns out these guys do have feelings and now they’re probably going to be hellbent on killing Diego.
Speaking of, he’s with Luther who is pissed at Five and not happy with the plan to track down their dad. After sucker-punching Five, Diego follows him out into the road and the two bicker about their purpose in their father’s life. Diego is still hot on the JFK trail because everything his siblings are involved with somehow link back to the president, Luther’s involvement with Jack Ruby, Allison’s business with politics, etc.
Still, Luther thinks Diego only wants to play hero because their father told them they were heroes, but if it was all a lie? What if they’re just freaks with no greater purpose?
Before they can get into a bigger argument Diego says he thinks they’re actually on the right path — literally — because a mysterious black car has been following them. It pulls up alongside them on the road and an elderly man gets out and hands Diego an envelope. Inside is a fancy invitation from Reginald himself for his “pursuers” to meet him for a light supper.
Meanwhile, Allison, Vanya, and Klaus decide to blow off some steam by getting drunk, dancing, and gossiping about their complicated, messed-up lives at Odessa’s. There, Klaus realizes he needs to break up his cult, especially since he told them the wrong doomsday date, Allison decides she’s going to confess everything to her husband, and Vanya wants to tell Sissy she loves her.
Sadly for Vanya, things don’t go the way she planned with Sissy. She shows up drunk and discovers her and Carl just had sex. Regardless, she begs Sissy to run away with her but Sissy refuses, saying all those pillow talk conversations were just that — fantasies and nothing more.
While his siblings are out trying to tie up the loose ends from the new lives they’ve created since crash-landing in Dallas, Five follows his own lead, after Lila. Not only was he correct about thinking there was something suspicious going on with her, but he even had a hunch The Handler was involved.
Following Lila to an abandoned warehouse, Five and Lila get into a fight as he tries to make good on his promise to kill her. Ultimately, he traps her under his foot by standing on her throat as The Handler makes her appearance and seems to have a deal in mind for Five.
The episode ends with Allison approaching Raymond and promising to tell him everything while Klaus returns to the mansion and gets swarmed by his followers.
