The Walking Dead Season 10 Episode 9: “Squeeze”

Daryl and Connie began to bond slowly over her willingness to help even when Daryl didn’t want to put her in harm’s way. In the beginning, Connie and Daryl communicated through written words due to Daryl’s inability to understand sign language.

By Season 10 Daryl had picked up a book on ASL and slowly began communicating thus with her.

Their bond began to grow to the point Carol noticed. Which is what makes this episode all the more heartbreaking. As Daryl, Connie, Kelly, Magna, Aaron and Jerry try to escape walkers in a cave, Carol finds dynamite and makes an executive decision to use it.

Her reckless decision causes the cave to collapse as Jerry tries to keep the only way out open enough for everyone to escape. However, Magna and Connie wind up trapped inside leading to Daryl nearly having a breakdown.

Norman’s ability to exude raw emotion, especially one of sadness has been Emmy-worthy throughout several heartbreaking episodes including Season 3 “This Sorrowful Life” and Season 5 “Coda”.

Watching Daryl immediately rush in a panic to move as many heavy rocks as he can without thinking is gut-wrenching.

He refuses to stop, begging Aaron to help him and only ceases when Kelly warns that walkers heard the explosion and they won’t be able to save Connie and Magna if they are dead. The last thing Daryl wants to do is stop, immediately stating there may be another way into the cave.

He completely ignores Carol’s tears of regret, with one goal on his mind.
