The season 1 finale of Netflix’s Ultraman is brutal!

The season 1 finale of Ultraman begins with Seiji (Gunnar Sizemore) heading out for battle with Ace Killer (Hiroaki Hirata), to defend his fellow “Ultramen” and, ostensibly, to defend Yuko (Erin Fitzgerald). He holds his own, at first. In fact, he does better than Shinjiro (Josh Hutcherson
and Moroboshi (Takuya Eguchi). However, the alien assassins keep taunting him, perhaps chipping away at his fighting mindset and prowess.

Before long, Seiji gets mercilessly shot up, with the aliens surprised by how resilient he is. Shinjiro would help, but he’s too busy fighting an alien who ensnares him in ultra-strong plant tentacles. Moroboshi finally semi-recovers from the explosion, and the SSSP drops him a weapon. Moroboshi slashes an alien up, but both he and Shinjiro get wrapped in those darn alien tentacles!

Ultraman: The death of Seiji?

More from Netflix

In the midst of fighting, Shinjiro requests the Limiter weapon from Ide (Brian Palermo), but it’s somehow jammed. Seiji, now weakened, gets somewhat emboldened when Ace Killer promises to kill Yuko “humanely.”

It inspired Seiji to slash off the alien’s arm. It doesn’t prove very effective, however, as the alien moves so fast that starts rapidly slashing Seiji up even more.

In a huge moment in Ultraman, Seiji gets impaled in the battle. Although Seiki retaliates by blasting a hole in its chest, the alien stubbornly refuses to die. Then, in another huge turn, Shinjiro spontaneously triggers the Limiter weapon, resulting in him swiftly destroying the plant tentacle alien. The officials of SSSP are impressed that Shinjiro unleashed the weapon through sheer force of will.

The specium ray saves the day

Feeling his renewed confidence, Shinjiro’s Ultraman rather quickly vaporizes Ace Killer with his specium ray. Obviously Shinjiro is no longer holding back. They can’t seem to catch a break, though. Bemular (Kaiji Soze) shows up, which seems potentially deadly. However, much to Shinjiro’s surprise, Bemular insists he’s there to save Seiji, not to fight them. Finally, Yapool (Mick Wingert), the red alien who originally helped Seiji, gets kidnapped by Jack (Robbie Daymond).

What this might mean for season 2

Ultraman has blurred the lines between friend and foe throughout season 1. In fact, Seiji himself has come across as rather shifty. With Bemular now seemingly playing an impartial role, it looks like all bets are off. One might expect Moroboshi to stop trash-talking Shinjiro so much, after outperforming him in battle with Ace Killer and company.

Still, those tensions could very easily return in season 2.  It’s fair to speculate that Seiji will likely be revived by Bemular, though we don’t know for what purpose.  Bemular had previously battled Shinjiro and his father,  Shin Hayata (Hideyuki Tanaka), nearly killing Shin.

Apparently, season 2 is now in production, so there is no definite release date as of yet.  However, season 2 does have a trailer.  You can watch that by clicking here!  In the meantime, you can obviously rewatch season 1, and experience other incarnations of Ultraman over the years.
