2. Canceled shows: Hannibal

Hannibal stands out as one of those shows that was canceled well before its time and yet has maintained a very dedicated, loyal fanbase ever since. The horror-thriller series based on the iconic cannibal Hannibal Lecter was created by skilled and creative Bryan Fuller, and yet, for some reason, it aired on NBC of all places.

There have been talks in recent years of a reboot or continuation of some kind, and if that does come to pass, it definitely needs to happen somewhere that is not broadcast television. Hannibal did have significant, dark content, it definitely pushed the boundaries, but it explains why the show did not find an audience.

The average person watching NBC wasn’t going to get super into a grisly,  disturbing series like Hannibal. Many fans have discovered the show in recent years via streaming. Had it started out the way and given people the chance to binge it all in one sitting, I think it would have fared better. It got a lot of comparisons to shows like True Detective, especially with its crazy disturbing moments, if only we could have seen how creative the showrunners would have been on a less restrictive service.

1. Canceled shows: The Secret Circle

The Secret Circle is one of those show cancellations that still stings, even after all these years. The CW produced it because The Vampire Diaries was doing incredibly well at the time and they hoped the two shows, both based on books by the same author, would pair well together.

Unfortunately, The Secret Circle never got the ratings the network was after. ironically, compared to what The CW averages now, it wasn’t performing badly at all, which makes the sting of its cancellation harder to process.

While I understand why The Secret Circle was picked up by The CW, like Salem, I can’t help but imagine what it could have been like on Netflix. It could have been Chilling Adventures of Sabrina before that show was even conceived!
