Netflix offers a first look at The Haunting of Bly Manor.
After more than a year since the chilling Haunting of Hill House adaptation aired on Netflix, the streaming service has finally given us a first look at the upcoming sequel season, The Haunting of Bly Manor.
While Season 1 was inspired by Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name, Season 2 will take story beats from Henry James’s famous novella The Turn of the Screw. It will also draw from some of James’s other works, such as The Romance of Certain Old Clothes and The Jolly Corner.
Even though the critically-acclaimed horror series will be an anthology, many actors from Season 1 are set to return for Season 2, and Mike Flanagan remains in charge.
Considering what a bad year 2020 has been, Netflix has come through with a lot of great content while people have been stuck indoors. The first look images and information, shared by Vanity Fair, revealing that fans won’t have much longer to wait before they get to see the new episodes.
What will The Haunting of Bly Manor be about?
As mentioned, the new season will follow James’s novella. It centers on a young woman who relocates to the English countryside to care for orphaned children and while there begins to feel a sense of foreboding and oddities about the estate.
Hopefully, it’ll be nothing like box office bomb that was The Turning, which released earlier this year and was based on the same source material.
According to Vanity Fair, The Haunting of Bly Manor will be about “broken hearts that never heal and tragic star-crossed romance,” with horror elements, of course.
Of the new story, Flanagan says, “It certainly provides a new way to tell a love story, and there are three of them that really beat at the heart of this season. They all have a very dark edge to them. And by the end, it’s really hard to differentiate tragedy with romance. That sense of romantic longing for someone who meant so much to us—but who’s gone—really is the heart of any ghost story.”
Victoria Pedretti is returning. Pedretti played Nell in Season 1 and will portray the leading character this season, an American tutor named Dani Clayton. Seeking a change of scenery, she takes a job that entails caring for the Wingrave Mansion at a mansion.
Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen are also returning for The Haunting of Bly Manor.
As for when the season will be released, we don’t yet have a set date but it seems like the show will be out this fall, I’m guessing Netflix will aim for an October release as they did with Hill House.
