A Pretty Little Liars reboot is in the works from Riverdale creator.

In some unexpected news this Wednesday afternoon, Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is planning a Pretty Little Liars reboot only a few years after the original wrapped its seventh and final season. The decision also comes on the heels of the short-lived Pretty Little Liars spin-off The Perfectionists, which only lasted one season before being canceled by Freeform.

The Hollywood Reporter nabbed the juicy exclusive after sources revealed that The CW showrunner was interested in reviving the Warner Bros. legacy series. While PLL’s popularity waned in its final seasons, the show’s popularity cannot be denied. The early seasons helped put Freeform on the map and popularized things like livetweeting with cast members on social media.

For those who were hoping to see some of their favorite characters return, however, that is not likely to be the case this time around. According to the article, Aguirre-Sacasa’s take will feature a brand new storyline and characters. Considering Pretty Little Liars is based on a book series by Sara Shepard, it seems the subject matter will veer heavily away from its source material.

No network is attached to the project yet, although THR reports that the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max appears to be the main target for the developing series.

Do we really need a Pretty Little Liars reboot?

More from Freeform

Considering it has only been three years since Pretty Little Liars went off the air with its divisive final season, the question we all must answer is whether or not a Pretty Little Liars reboot is necessary right now.

Honestly, no, it’s not. I think we all know that. But reboots, spin-offs, revivals, and sequel series are all the rage right now in an entertainment stratosphere that seems unable to concoct new and original ideas.

Even stranger is the fact that the reboot series would feature brand new characters. Considering fans got attached to Emily, Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Alison, that makes sense,  as no one would want to see them recast — but at the same time, as mentioned, the show is based on a book series. If the reboot is going to have a new story and characters,  then what’s the point of calling it Pretty Little Liars?

I suppose “A” will feature into the show in some capacity, but it seems like WarnerMedia wants another teen murder mystery series and thinks having the title Pretty Little Liars attached will bring in more views. That didn’t exactly pan out with Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists.

Still, at the same time, I admit I’ll be curious to see what the rebooted version of the show looks like, I’m sure it’ll fit in nicely alongside the upcoming Gossip Girl reboot.
