What did we learn from the new Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 trailer?

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is a little over a month away from releasing on CBS All Access, and to celebrate Star Trek Day, a new trailer teases all the drama and excitement awaiting fans from October 15.

The trailer gives us the first look at Star Trek’s first transgender character, Gray (Ian Alexander), and the franchise’s first non-binary character Adira (Blu de Barrio). We also get extended looks at new cast member David Ajala, who is playing Book, and the returning main cast Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Hugh Culber), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Michelle Yeoh (Georgiou), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Emily Coutts (Detmer) and Oyin Oladejo (Owosekun).

Most of the Discovery crew joined Michael Burnham 930 years in the future. So, what does the 32nd century have in store for the crew?

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 – Welcome to 3188

From the new trailer of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, it’s obvious that the universe is nothing like the one left behind by Burnham and the rest of the crew. In 3188, the Federation has long been gone following ‘the Burn’ and the world is run by lawlessness.

While the outlook is bleak, Burnham seems to be on top of the world with a mission to create a new Federation. Speaking at Star Trek Day, Jonathan Frakes said that Martin-Green’s presence on set has completely transformed because her ‘character is no longer driven by fear’.

This is evident from almost every frame we see of Burnham in the trailer. She’s giddy, optimistic and a leader. We have not seen this character smile and laugh so hard. Burnham deserves it. She’s also in amongst the action, and did we spot her leaning into a kiss with Book?

Burnham and Book seem to spend a lot of time together in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, and he’s essentially the Discovery crew’s guide in the future. He appears skeptical of Burnham’s story, which may suggest that the Earth (or whichever planet Discovery has crashed on) has gone back to being pre-warp.

When introducing the new trailer, Ajala mentioned the arrival of a new crew member on the show—Grudge the cat. She’s a feisty little critter, but she is absent from the trailer.

As expected, Georgiou is up to no good. Michelle Yeoh had hinted that the character was angry about her new circumstance, and she takes it out the only way she knows how—by getting into fights, of course.

Saru, Tilly, and several other crew members appear to be struggling with their new lives. You can’t blame them since they left everything behind. And yet, by the end of the trailer, they seem to have found a way to bond and become each other’s family. There’s humour in there courtesy Tig Notaro, and one can expect more eventually.

The trailer promises so much action and character development. The combination of seeing old favourites in a new situation and welcoming new faces to the franchise is exciting.
