Joel Kinnaman stars in Apple TV Plus’s space drama For All Mankind. This alternative history show focuses on what might have happened if the Space Race had never ended and the first crewed mission to the moon in the 1960s was a success for NASA and the U.S.

For All Mankind centers on a Russian cosmonaut named Alexei Leonov, who becomes the first human to land on the moon, catalyzing Americans to rush to catch up with the Soviet Union.

It becomes an even more intense race when the Soviet Union adds a woman to their future missions, motivating the U.S. to train more women and minorities who were initially excluded in the early days of space exploration. For All Mankind was renewed for a second season.

Produced by National Geographic, Mars is a fascinating docuseries mixing elements of hard sci-fi to create a compelling hybrid series that should get any Away fan prepared for season 2.

Since the bulk of the sophomore season will likely revolve around the Atlas crew creating a settlement on Mars, what better way to prepare than by learning a little more about the red planet? The fictional elements of the two-season series follow a crew of astronauts launching from Florida to be the first people to set foot on Mars in the year 2033.

The story then jumps years into the future to see the colony they create on Mars called Olympus Town. The second season explores the consequences that colonizing the planet has on humans. Throughout the show, real-life interview footage is mixed into the series from public figures like Elon Musk, Andy Weir, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and more.

Mars is streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
