Supergirl Season 6 will be the show’s last, it has been confirmed. It follows in the footsteps of Arrow, the progenitor of the CWverse, which ended in 2020.

It’s the news nobody wanted to hear—Supergirl Season 6 will be the show’s final outing, Deadline has reported. The news was confirmed by star Melissa Benoist, and some of the show’s producers and writers on social media.

Supergirl began life in 2015 on CBS as a standalone show from the Arrowverse—since rechristened the CWverse—which included Arrow and The Flash, at the time.

By the end of Season 1 of Supergirl, a crossover episode with The Flash cemented the show in the Arrowverse—and foreshadowed the series’ move from CBS to The CW. Since joining the Arrowverse, Supergirl and her team have been invaluable in crossovers, helping to save the world and even the universe.

On Instagram, Benoist shared her thoughts on Supergirl Season 6, her journey with the character, and how much the show has positively impacted young girls. She ended the caption with “el mayarah”, which means ‘stronger together’ in Kryptonian. Yes, we are all crying.

Supergirl Season 6 may be the last we see of these characters and this story, but the show’s legacy has already led to changes in the world of entertainment.

Supergirl Season 6: What do we know so far?

Production on all CW shows, including Supergirl Season 6, was postponed due to the pandemic. This also led to a curtailed ending for the previous season.

However, we now know that production on Supergirl Season 6 will be starting soon in Vancouver. Benoist will be joining the production a bit later as she is expecting her first child—production will be worked around Benoist’s schedule till her arrival.

With Supergirl Season 6 being the final outing for the series, the writing team has been tasked with creating a longer-than-usual season.

So far, the show has been given a 20-episode order for Season 6, which will hopefully wrap up the series to everyone’s satisfaction.

Supergirl Season 6: What is the show’s legacy?

Long before the DCEU’s Wonder Woman and Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Supergirl was the first female-led superhero property in a very long time. The show’s positivity, the message of hope, and relatable female characters resonated with fans who had long felt marginalized.

The relationship between Kara Danvers and her Earth-sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), was particularly powerful, as were Kara and Alex’s friendship with Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), and later, Nia Nal/ Dreamer (Nicole Maines), the first transgender superhero on television.

Supergirl also became a founding member of the Justice League by the end of the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover, along with Batwoman, Black Lightning, the Flash, Martian Manhunter, Superman, and White Canary. How the League will be impacted by Supergirl’s absence remains to be seen.

Not only will the League miss Supergirl, but so will the many fans of the show and the character. Plus, the plethora of amazing characters around her will also be leaving a hole in the CWverse.

With Superman and Lois coming soon, we could possibly see some of the characters cross over to that show. Perhaps Supergirl will help her cousin from time to time. We can only hope.

The world of entertainment has long struggled with bringing marginalized characters to the forefront. But Supergirl managed to do it time and time again. Hopefully, she will leave behind a better world than the one she entered.
