The Mandalorian Season 2: Will we see Ezra Bridger?
By Monita Mohan
The Mandalorian Season 2 is around the corner. Could we see another Star Wars animated character make the jump to live-action?
This entire article is Rahul Kohli’s fault. World-famous nerd and seemingly nice guy sent the internet into a frenzy when he posted a tweet about a certain Lothal orphan. Ever since, Kohli (iZombie/ Supergirl), has been backtracking from speculation that he will be appearing as Ezra Bridger in The Mandalorian Season 2.
For anyone not in the know, Lothal featured prominently on Star Wars Rebels and protagonist Ezra Bridger was the local who joined the Ghost team. Speculation has been rife that more members of Star Wars Rebels will be appearing on The Mandalorian Season 2, because Ahsoka Tano has reportedly been cast.
Fans have also wondered if a mysterious new character seen in the trailer is Sabine Wren, another significant member of the Ghost team. Since the last time we saw Sabine and Ahsoka, they were on the hunt for Ezra, who was lost in space, will their search end on The Mandalorian Season 2?
The Mandalorian Season 2: Why do we want to see Ezra Bridger?
Kohli’s tweet had the hashtag #Ezra trending in the US, but he has gone out of his way to reassure everyone who would listen that he is not, in fact, starring as Ezra Bridger on The Mandalorian Season 2.
Kohli would have been a good choice to play the former padawan learner. He’s a huge fan of Star Wars as well as the character specifically and he has similar ethnicity to the animated character. The fanart out there has certainly convinced us.
Despite his blue hair and name, Ezra seemed to be drawn with obvious Middle Eastern origins. Kohli’s heritage is of Indian origin, but Hollywood has yet to figure out the difference among most ethnicities.
The Mandalorian could do with much more representative diversity on the show, and an Arab or sub-continent origin actor would be a welcome addition to the cast.
But that’s not the only reason we want Ezra Bridger to return. We have questions; questions that haven’t been answered for over two years. In the series finale of Rebels, Ezra sacrificed himself to stop Grand Admiral Thrawn from destroying Lothal and killing his friends.
But Ezra didn’t die—he disappeared into a far corner of space. All this happened before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. In the epilogue of Rebels, we learnt that the remaining Ghost team had survived the Battle of Endor and were planning to search for their missing team member.
The Mandalorian Season 2 is set a few years after Return of the Jedi, which means Ezra is much older, as are Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren. While Ahsoka most likely will appear on the show, Sabine and Ezra’s arrivals are more a sign of fan wish fulfilment.
The Mandalorian Season 2: Why do we think the Ghost team will return?
The Ghost team from Star Wars Rebels is indirectly tied to The Mandalorian. Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) was seen brandishing the Darksaber in the first season finale of the Disney Plus spin-off.
The Darksaber is historically a weapon of the Mandalorian. Created by the first Mandalorian Jedi, the weapon fell into the hands of the extremist radical group, Deathwatch, during Queen Satine’s pacifist rule.
Later, Ezra Bridger discovered the weapon while on a mission with his master, Kanan Jarrus. He handed it to Sabine Wren, the only Mandalorian on the Ghost team. She learnt to use the weapon with Kanan’s help, before bequeathing it to Satine’s sister, Bo-Katan Kryze.
We don’t know yet how Moff Gideon got his hands on the weapon, but the appearance of the Darksaber has certainly lent itself to the ever-growing speculation of the Rebels characters crossing over to the live-action world.
Could we see the Ghost zipping across hyperspace with Hera Syndulla, Zeb Orrelios, Sabine, and Chopper at the helm?
The Mandalorian Season 2 will star Pedro Pascal as Mando, Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), Cara Dune (Gina Carano), Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, and Timothy Olyphant and Sasha Banks in unknown roles.
