10. Best fall TV shows: The X-Files

Do you like shows that are all about trying to explain the unexplainable? The X-Files is one of the longest-running science fiction series in television history and serves as the blueprint for many shows within the genre that followed.

It revolves around two FBI agents trying to explain mysterious, twisted, unsolved cases dubbed the “X-files.” Gillian Anderson plays skeptic Dana Scully while her partner, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), is a notable conspiracy theorist. They’ll do everything in their power to prove that the “truth is out there.” Not only is there plenty of weird alien stories, cryptozoology, and all-around creepiness, it’s just a classic show that everyone should watch at least once.

The X-Files is now streaming on Hulu.

9. Best fall TV shows: Twin Peaks

Speaking of shows that started a trend, you know how countless shows nowadays begin with a dead girl in a small town? Well, you can thank Twin Peaks for that. Twin Peaks heavily inspired Stranger Things, True Detective, The Killing, Riverdale, etc. The David Lynch-created show was set in the mysterious small town of Twin Peaks where popular, well-liked Laura Palmer washes up on the shore, dead.

Her death is just the tip of the iceberg for this surreal show full of vibrant characters and confounding mysteries. If you like it enough, make sure to check out the recent revival series on Showtime; it’s not a reboot either — most of the original cast and Lynch returned to create it!

Twin Peaks is streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and CBS All Access.
