Utopia Season 2: Plot details, release date, & more

Are you done watching Utopia Season 1 and eager to learn about a potential Utopia Season 2? Here’s everything that we know so far!

Last week, Amazon Prime Video released the first season of the U.S. remake of the original U.K. black-comedy drama series, Utopia. Once consuming the eight bingeable episodes of the show and its twisty finale, you might be eager to know what happens next. Will we get Utopia Season 2?

It’s too early to say, especially because the show has not done well with critics. Audiences remain mixed with fans of the original overall unimpressed with the Gillian Flynn-created remake. That said, it might not matter if the series managed to rack up impressive viewership numbers.

Flynn stuffed the Season 1 finale with twists, betrayals and potential storylines for Season 2. Ian and Alice are left alone. Will they remain together and try to save Grant and find Becky? Speaking of Becky, she’s been forcibly taken along for the ride by Wilson, who turned traitor, and the Christies, who want to find Jessica Hyde.

I feel like Becky might get entangled in that web if Kevin Christie offers her a cure for Diels. Since they created it, surely they have a treatment for it?

And Jessica, poor Jessica. She finally thought she’d have a little peace only to walk straight into Mr. Rabbit’s hands. Mr. Rabbit turned out to be Agent Milner. She’s not Homeland — she’s Home, and she’s keeping Jessica’s father locked in her basement. Jessica has a series of strange symbols carved into her back that appears to be needed to create a new, potentially genocidal virus.  While Christie wanted to prevent future generations from being born, Milner appears to have more murderous intentions.

Then there’s Grant and Michael. Poor Grant has been arrested for supposedly being a spree killer after the Harvest orchestrated his demise with the fake news broadcast. Michael finished destroying the virus eggs sans one, which he kept for himself. Why?

Thankfully, creator Flynn told Variety she has plans to explore the “Milner-Christie-Dad origin story” in the second season. She claims she already knows the mythology of their story and connections.

Additional revelations from Flynn’s interview are as follows:

• She also wants people to question whether Milner is holding Jessica’s father hostage or just keeping him safe.
• She hasn’t yet decided if Wilson has 100% betrayed the group or potentially has a different plan up his sleeve.

When would Utopia Season 2 premiere?

Given our real-life circumstances and the backlash Utopia received for airing at what has been deemed an insensitive moment, I imagine if Amazon goes through with renewing Utopia, they might delay it. I don’t think we’ll see it before the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022 at the earliest.

That said, Season 2 likely won’t have another “pandemic” at the epicenter, at least not one as close to reality as we saw in the first, so it might not be as much of a concern.
