Get your coffee and brush up on the Prime Directive, Star Trek fans because Captain Janeway is heading back to the stars!
Kate Mulgrew will be reprising her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager in the upcoming Nickelodeon animated show Star Trek: Prodigy. The news was announced at New York Comic-Con and confirmed via Star Trek.com.
The show will follow a group of ‘lawless teens’ who find an abandoned Starfleet vessel which they commandeer to go on adventures. As is the won’t of Star Trek shows, the teens will also find themselves and form strong bonds with each other in the process.
Prodigy is being developed by Emmy Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman, who will also act as showrunners. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth are executive producers on the show.
It was during the NYCC panel on Prodigy that Kurtzman announced Mulgrew’s return as the iconic Captain Janeway.
Speaking of returning to the role she first took on 25 years ago, Mulgrew stated: “I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”
Mulgrew also took to Twitter to share her excitement at playing Captain Janeway again.
Shortly after the news broke on Twitter, Jeri Ryan, who recently reprised her role of Seven of Nine from Voyager on Star Trek: Picard, welcomed Mulgrew back to the fold.
The announcement comes shortly after Mulgrew expressed an interest in playing Captain Janeway again during the Voyager panel on Star Trek Day.
Star Trek: Prodigy: Who is Captain Janeway?
Mulgrew played Captain Janeway for all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager, which debuted in 1995. She also had a cameo as Admiral Janeway in Star Trek: Nemesis.
Captain Janeway was the first female lead of a Star Trek show, and the first female captain, which was ground-breaking at the time and continued to be so for a while after.
Star Trek has since featured more women in positions of power with Michelle Yeoh playing Captain Philippa Georgiou and Emperor Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery, a show that also features the first Black female lead in Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham.
In many ways, Captain Janeway paved the way for women in sci-fi, but there is still much work to be done in genre television.
For young viewers of Star Trek: Prodigy, seeing Captain Janeway in an animated show will be a great introduction to a beloved and inspiring character.
