The Boys Season 2, Episode 4 is about love, loss, ego, and racist supe tyrants. Also, the so-called “Liberty” proves to be a familiar face.

The Boys Season 2, Episode 4 begins with Frenchie (Tomer Capon) doing drugs, presumably to cope with his high-intensity life. Meanwhile, his unrequited love interest, Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) is saddened as she sees the racist, murderous Stormfront (Aya Cash) taking credit for the death of Kiimiko’s brother, Kenji (Abraham Lim) — who’s summarily dismissed as a super terrorist in news footage.

Then, bizarrely, we see that Homelander (Antony Starr) is fantasizing about Vought’s Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue), although it’s actually Doppelganger (Dan Darin-Zanco) taking her form. It’s all the more creepy because Homelander had killed her in the season 1 finale.

Meanwhile, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) meets Grace Mallory (Laila Robins) about investigating a supe from the 1970s called “Liberty,” while also detailing the whereabouts of his wife, Becca (Shantel VanSanten). After Mother’s Milk, or “MM” (Laz Alonso), is tasked with finding Liberty, we catch a scene at The Seven’s headquarters, where Homelander confronts Starlight (Erin Moriarty) in the elevator.

He tells her that Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) begged him to spare her life after she failed to murder Hughie in the tunnel. He also threatens to kill her with his fingers (which the character would totally be able to do)!

The Boys Season 2, Episode 4 recap: A new mission, finding Liberty

After learning that Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) has reinvigorated his quest to track Billy Butcher, Hughie somehow meets with Starlight in the park. Starlight wants to go with Hughie and MM on their mission to track down the mysterious “Liberty.” As these plans are developed, A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) is upset that his competitor, Shockwave (Mishka Thébaud) is around for “Vought for Tots.” When A-Train complains about it, he is promptly kicked out of The Seven due to his heart condition, and doesn’t think having his own reality show on “Vought Plus” is enough.

Anyway, as Hughie, MM, and Starlight head off on their own road trip, Starlight’s song comes on the radio. Although Hughie’s impressed with her singing ability, she is embarrassed, so they switch it to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” instead. While this seems like a minor event, it really does give insight into how little she feels about her role in The Seven and Vought, and how she wants to distance herself from their abuse, even when knowingly (and possibly needlessly) putting her life at risk.

The Boys Season 2, Episode 4 recap: Why Billy was spared / Relationship stuff

A few interesting things occur rather quickly in the next scenes. Billy Butcher successfully scales the wall to meet with Becca, and she reveals that Homelander only spared his life because she threatened to kill herself in front of Ryan (Cameron Crovetti). They then craft plans to sneak away in a garbage truck. Elsewhere, Frenchie meets with Cherie (Jordana Lajoie) to discuss his unrequited love for Kimiko.

Meanwhile, as two of The Boys and Starlight try to procure hotel rooms, a car accident happens. Starlight is upset that she can’t help as they are undercover. Although Hughie is supposed to room with MM, he ultimately has another session with Starlight, who also says she’s worried about Homelander killing her at any moment. It’s not all a downer, though, as the trip do occasionally crack jokes and sort of bond as a team. In addition to Hughie and Starlight getting it on, Billy and Becca have such a moment, too.

The Seven also still have relationship drama. In a talk show interview with Queen Maeve and Homelander about Compound V, Homelander is asked about The Seven’s lack of diversity. Homelander mentions they have A-Train (though he was just privately fired). Then, after stumbling a bit, he also mentions that Queen Maeve is in a relationship with Elena (Nicola Correia-Damude). Queen Maeve later speaks with him about it, although she tries not to incur his wrath and basically downplays her relationship with Elena.

The Boys Season 2, Episode 4 recap: Stormfront’s true colors

In the next scene, Stormfront gives a rabble-rousing speech mocking Vought and making the crowd fear supe terrorists. Kimiko happens to be there, but she is stopped from launching a fight by Frenchie, who assures her that Stormfront would likely destroy her. Next, we rejoin two of The Boys and Starlight as they interview a woman named Valerie (Dawnn Lewis) about Liberty.

In addition to learning MM’s father was a lawyer who fought Vought, Valerie says Liberty had killed her brother, Myron (Howard Campbell), in a purely racist attack, and she was left for dead. She also identifies Liberty as being Stormfront. Next, we see Homelander enraged at Stormfront after viewing memes of her outperforming Homelander. She reveals that the memes are actually planted by her personal staff, adding that Homelander’s flaw is thinking he needs to “win over everyone.” She says “emotion sells, anger sells.”

The Boys Season 2, Episode 4 recap: Freaky closing moments

This episode of The Boys winds down with Becca deciding not to leave with Billy, especially after he refers to her son Ryan as a “supe freak.” Although he says they could start over again with a new family, she rejects the idea. She also says that Homelander raped her, which definitely clashes with season one’s implications that the relationship might have been consensual. So, as she leaves, Billy has renewed reason to hate Homelander even more.

Also, Starlight seems to break it off with Hughie, saying they can’t afford to feel good or let their guard down. Then, a few more interesting moments take shape. The Deep (Chace Crawford) is apparently getting an arranged marriage with someone named Cassandra (Katy Breier).

Then we see Homelander with Doppelganger once again. This time, he freakishly transforms into a twin version of Homelander, suggesting the hero’s in love with himself. However, moments before breaking the shapeshifter’s neck, Homelander says “I don’t need everyone to love me. I don’t need anyone.”
