After seemingly endless backstage turmoil and more than a year off the air, Starz has finally unveiled a teaser trailer for American Gods Season 3.

According to TVLine, American Gods Season 3 new season will follow our beloved Shadow Moon (now known as Mike Ainsel) to his new town of Lakeside, Wisconsin. When we last saw him, he was hightailing it out of Cairo, but his past won’t be so easy to leave behind.

The trailer teases Mr. Wednesday’s return. He’s not keen on letting Shadow escape permanently escape him. Laura Moon (Emily Browning) is also briefly visible throughout the teaser alongside multiple new characters, like Julie Sweeney’s Hinzelman.

When will American Gods Season 3 debut?

While the teaser does confirm that the new season will premiere sometime in 2021, we still don’t have an exact date. As most fans of the series are likely aware by now, the show has seen its fair share of troubles behind-the-scenes.

From showrunners leaving to allegations of discrimination, it’s surprising that American Gods managed to make it to Season 3 at all. It’ll be interesting to see if it sticks around for another season.

What else do we know about American Gods Season 3?

Stylistically, American Gods Season 3 looks similar to the first two seasons, at least in the first look released by Starz at NYCC 2020. But it’ll be hard to make an accurate judgment until we see the third season. Many viewers checked out during Season 2 after perceiving a major dip in quality between seasons.

This time around, Charles H. Eglee, who co-created Dark Angel alongside James Cameron, will serve as the series showrunner.

Per TVLine, Season 3 of the series based on Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name will include some exciting new cast additions like Danny Trejo, who will play an incarnation of Mr. World, Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) as a leprechaun named Leon Doyle and rapper Wale as an Orisha.

Fan-favorite characters Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schrieber) and Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones) will not be returning. Jones has previously spoken out about being fired from the series.

“And all what I was told was, ‘angry gets s— done’ is the wrong message for black America, and that the new showrunner [Chic Eglee] writes from a black male perspective,” alleged Jones.
