In Grand Army Episode 6 Jay gets his chance to play at All-State, with a catch. Meanwhile, Dom gets a chance at her dream internship.

Grand Army Episode 6, “Superman This S–t,” opens with Dom getting busy with her side hustle — the haircare business. It’s off to a good start at school. She sells some of her organic hair care products to her teammates after practice. Even her coach gets in on the merchandise and suddenly Dom is $40 richer!

We switch to Leila and Omar, who are busy smoking weed. They talk about their similarities in regards to their mixed heritages and again, Leila says she isn’t sure if she believes Joey was raped. Omar believes she was, pointing out the guys have more reason to lie than she did. He also quotes a line from The Vagina Monologues, one Leila doesn’t even recognize.

Most of Leila’s refusal to believe Joey hinges on two things: she doesn’t like Joey and she has a crush on George. It proves how her shallow her definition of feminism is, how much she still has to learn. She also remains oblivious to Omar’s feelings for her.

Sid and Victor work on their science project, which involves testing stimulus and reactions. They test each other’s reflexes and their responses to stimuli. It results in Sid getting an erection, which makes things quite awkward between the two of them. Victor changes tactics by pointing out a photo of Flo on Sid’s wall. Sid interjects that they broke up, but are now back together.

Later, Victor tells Sid about when he came out as bisexual at school. He tells him that it was easier for him at school than at home, seemingly hinting that he knows what Sid is struggling with.

At Dom’s house, Dom gets to work on braiding the hair of one of her clients. Things get complicated when John and Tamika come over to study and hang out. Not knowing John was coming over, Dom is embarrassed to have him see her house in such disarray. Luckily, John isn’t the type of guy to care about that sort of thing and helps put her mind at ease. Even better, Dom has three potential new clients lined up.

Jay meets with his music teacher and finds out he’s been selected as an alternate for All-State. It’s a good news-bad news situation. Owen got in, but because of his suspension, he won’t be able to do it. Jay is eligible to replace him, as an alternate, but obviously, he doesn’t feel right about taking something away from his best friend.

Grand Army Episode 6 recap: Dom makes a tough decision.

Since Dom can’t make the basketball game due to her prospering hair business, she decides it might be best to take a temporary break because she can’t fully commit the way she used to. Further problems erupt when Dom finds out she can’t leave school early to get to her clients without a guardian signing her out, despite having a note from her mom. She breaks the rules and walks out in front of a security guard. I have a feeling that’s going to have repercussions later.

Joey still hasn’t returned to school since filing charges against Luke and George. She spends some time jogging to clear her head.

In the library, Sid is trying to overcompensate for his relationship with Flo by making promises to visit her every single weekend throughout college. Even Flo is a little confused. First, she’s too much to handle and now Sid can’t stay away from her? He claims he was just being an idiot before, but he’s in it for real now.

Dom gets a culture shock when she arrives to meet her private school clients. They’re impressed with her because she goes to Grand Army, a notoriously competitive school. In contrast, the three girls drink La Croix, are in and out of therapy and their school doesn’t even have a normal grading rubric. Despite wanting to be a psychologist, Dom reveals she’s never seen a therapist because it’s not common where she lives.

Owen is going to a new school in a rougher part of town. When Jay finds him, he’s sporting a black eye after getting jumped. Jay wants Owen to feel proud of getting into All-State, but Owen doesn’t care anymore. He can’t have it, so what’s the point? He also blames Jay for putting him there since what he said in his statement somewhat sealed the deal for him. Owen tells Jay to stay away from him.

Returning from her run, Joey happens to see George, Anna and Luke exiting George’s apartment and she panics. By the time she gets home, she’s in tears again.

“I’m drowning here, Mom. I want to disappear.”

Grand Army Episode 6 recap: Leila confesses her sins to Rabbi Sadie.

Sid’s big relay doesn’t go as planned. Orlov makes a mistake that results in a loss for the team. Sid and Bo almost come to blows over it in the locker room. Their coach breaks things up and tells Sid that the Harvard scouts are interested in seeing him. They’re impressed with his speed. In a rush to get ready, Sid leaves his laptop open, and an angry, bitter Orlov takes notice.

Dom tells her clients/new friends about the Sisters Thrive internship and how she’s hasn’t heard back yet regarding her application. They encourage her to call them and check on her app status. Dom does it and after revealing that her pastor recommended her and how passionate she is, the secretary tells her that they can squeeze her in for an interview the next morning at 8:30 a.m.

We pivot to Leila, who decides to visit with Rachel’s rabbi, Sadie Schultz (Lynn Weintraub), the woman who comforted her the night of Hannah’s bat mitzvah.

The rabbi thinks Leila looks happier than the last time they talked, but Leila says she’s faking it and is actually miserable. Leila confesses that she feels like a terrible person because she’s not sure why she posted about Joey and she’s concerned that George is a rapist.

She also tells Sadie about her fight with Rachel, how she feels like she doesn’t know her anymore. Sadie tells Leila that she should try and let go of some of the shame she’s feeling, and atone for the things she’s done to others.

Jay decides he’s going to play at All-State, after all. He doesn’t tell his dad the truth, that he’s stepping in as an alternate to Owen.

Grand Army Episode 6 recap: Someone posts Sid’s entire personal essay online.

Sid’s phone dies resulting in him being out of the loop when someone (I’m guessing Orlov) posts his entire personal essay online, essentially outing him to the world. It’s Meera who makes him aware and his first reaction is fear of their parents finding out.

In the final moments of the episode, we see a sleepy Dom pouring over her homework and drinking a five-hour energy drink. I have a bad feeling she’s going to doze off and miss her internship interview. Can this show give her a break?!

“You think being part of your elitist institution is some kind of superpower? It’s not,” says our typewritten manifesto.
