‘Grand Army’ Season 2: Will Netflix renew the series for more?
By Mads Lennon
Will Netflix move forward with Grand Army Season 2?
Did you finish binge-watching Grand Army and are now eager to find out if Netflix will greenlight Grand Army Season 2? Well, you’ve come to the right place! As of writing this, Netflix has not renewed Grand Army for another season, but we can make some educated guesses on the future of the show.
For starters, Grand Army does not seem to have made a big impact on social media or in streaming numbers. This is purely theorizing on my part, but I’ve hardly seen people discussing the series on Twitter and it isn’t currently in Netflix’s top ten. That doesn’t bode well for the show. However, sometimes Netflix series can take some time to take off.

The next factor working against Grand Army is that the show is marred in controversy. Before it even aired, several non-white writers quit and alleged that showrunner Katie Cappiello created a toxic environment on set and accused her of “racist exploitation and abuse.” Cosmopolitan wrote a piece about the allegations in detail.
Netflix shows have prospered in spite of controversy in the past, see 13 Reasons Why and Insatiable, but the issues with those shows were mainly due to the content, and not what happened behind-the-scenes. It remains to be seen if Netflix will decide Grand Army is a one-and-done series, or if an investigation will be launched into Cappiello.
What Grand Army does have going for it is the cost. I’m not an expert, but Grand Army is almost entirely comprised of newcomers and unknown actors. That means Netflix probably doesn’t have to pay the cast as much as they would a more established cast.
It’s also a fairly basic, grounded drama without the need for tons of VFX or special edits, which likely means it’s cheaper to produce than a lot of other Netflix content. If Netflix can reconcile a low cost, even with low viewership numbers, then they might decide to move forward with the project.
When would Grand Army Season 2 be released?
If Netflix renews the teen drama, it will probably be released around the same time next year. I can see it getting a late fall or winter release date. The only thing that would potentially delay that is the pandemic, but most shows and films have resumed filming at this point.
Netflix has had to take COVID-related production costs into consideration, but again, if Grand Army is inexpensive to produce, that would not necessarily cause any disruptions.
