‘Archive 81:’ Supernatural horror series from James Wan ordered to series at Netflix

James Wan is executive producing a new horror series called Archive 81 for Netflix. The series is based on the podcast of the same name.

James Wan is taking his creepy talents to Netflix for his next project. According to Variety, Wan is set to executive produce Archive 81, a supernatural horror show based on the podcast of the same name. Wan will produce under his production company Atomic Monster. Rebecca Sonnenshine of The Boys fame will serve as an executive producer, writer and showrunner on the project.

Netflix ordered eight episodes for the show’s premiere season. As far as the cast, Archive 81 will star Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion) and Dina Shihabi (Altered Carbon). No other casting announcements for the show have been revealed yet.

We don’t yet know the potential release date for the series either, but Netflix will probably try to release it in time for Halloween 2021.

In a statement, Sonnenshine said, “With ‘Archive 81,’ we’re hoping to give the supernatural horror genre a new twist – while keeping a dark, deeply emotional romance as its core.”

What is Archive 81 about?

Per the logline shared by Variety, Archive 81 will follow Dan Turner (Athie) after gets a job restoring a series of videotapes from 1994. In them, documentary filmmaker Melody Pendras (Shihabi) investigates a dangerous cult. As she gets deeper into the story, Dan becomes more obsessed with finding out what happened to her and begins to believe he might be able to save her from a terrible fate.

Rebecca Thomas, who previously worked on Limetown and Stranger Things, is slated to direct four of the eight episodes, including the premiere. She will also be an executive producer on the project alongside Wan.

The original podcast has three seasons so far and is currently available to stream free. The fiction podcast dives into the horror of cities, rituals and the subconscious. Co-creators Daniel Powell and Marc Sollinger will serve as producers on the Netflix series.
