‘Castlevania’ Season 3 finale recap: ‘Abandon All Hope’
By Wade Wainio
In the season 3 finale of Netflix’s Castlevania, kinkiness, chaos, and sheer evil culminate in cataclysm.
The season 3 finale of Castlevania begins with Isaac (Adetokumboh M’Cormack) walking down a hall, his footsteps echoing until he reaches a door. He kicks down this door, and we quickly are reminded of what he is looking for: A transmission mirror, which can magically transport him to the land of Styria. It is initially broken but reassembles itself in his commanding presence. Then Isaac commands his loyal legion of night creatures to kill the city’s residents but to leave the city itself standing.
Meanwhile, at the quaint town of Lindenfeld, Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso), and Saint Germain (Bill Nighy) face various sinister creatures as they work to close a portal to Hell. One of the creatures is a goatlike monster with a bow and arrows, which is neat (though one wonders where it gets its arrows from).
Castlevania boils over with battles and twisted discoveries!
As they fight these creatures, a giant one is being replenished with murdered souls, which is why Trevor struggles to kill it. However, this isn’t the only battle taking place. Outside of the priory basement battle, Sala (Navid Negahban) actually stabs Judge (Jason Isaacs). After being gravely wounded, The Judge tells Sala about a special location near an apple tree.
When Belmont and Saint Germain finally manage to slay the main night creature (through teamwork), they momentarily see Dracula (Graham McTavish) in Hell’s portal, which Saint Germain ends up entering.
Not enough battles? Well, there’s also Alucard (James Callis), who ends up skillfully killing Taka (Toru Uchikado) and Sumi (Rila Fukushima) in self-defense. However, one of the more interesting moments is when Sala dies from falling into a pit of spikes, conveniently located near The Judge’s apple tree. What a sly ruse on behalf of The Judge!
The Judge is soon discovered by Trevor and Sypha, who burn the man’s house down upon request, especially after discovering he’s a child murderer who collected children’s shoes as trophies!
What are the vamp sisters up to anyway?
This season of Castlevania has been rather restrained when it comes to Carmilla (Jaime Murray) and her scheme to conquer humans. In this episode, her vamp sisters are all quibbling over credit for such plans, and so much effort has been put into “taming” Hector (Theo James) by Lenore (Jessica Brown Findlay). Lenore has secured him with her magical slave ring, though it’s implied such magic might not be permanent.
Still, his night creatures will be bound to Lenore, due to his swearing loyalty to her, and any resistance from Hector will cause him great pain. On the vaguely brighter side, she says he’ll get a comfortable life in compensation, and that she has spared his life so he may become her pet. The episode’s kinkiness sort of gets sidestepped a bit, though, when we see Alucard impaling Sumi and Taka outside of his castle, as a warning to intruders.
