Feeling lonely on Christmas, Lily is inspired to start her notebook game at The Strand. Dash and Lily Episode 2 shows how the game began.

Dash and Lily Episode 2, aptly titled “Lily” since we switch to her side of the story, begins with another character introduction. This time, we get to learn about Lily. In opposition to Dash’s feelings, Lily is a Christmas enthusiast. She loves everything about the holidays, particularly getting to spend time with the people she loves.

So, imagine her disappointment, she learns that her parents are going away for an impromptu honeymoon, and her grandpa is traveling to Florida, leaving her behind. For the first time, Lily is left alone at Christmas with only her brother Langston (Troy Iwata) around to keep her company, and he’s too busy with his new boyfriend Benny (Diego Guevara) to give her the holiday cheer she’s after.

But Langston is the one who gives Lily the idea for the notebook. He comes up with the clues, too, aside from the Joni Mitchell song, which is all Lily’s idea. Lily is reluctant to go through with the journal.

It’s not until she continuously sees everyone around her coupling up that she realizes she should give it a chance. It also helps that her cousin, Mark (Patrick Vaill), the super-rude-yet-hilarious clerk at The Stand, is willing to help her with her book of dares.

Unfortunately, Lily is completely dismayed by Dash’s brutal anti-Christmas message. She thinks her brother set her up for failure because all of his clues made her seem jaded and sarcastic — which isn’t at all like her personality. Lily decides to forget the book altogether and try to focus her thoughts on Christmas instead, including doubling down on the caroling with a bunch of adults who have lives, jobs and priorities of their own to contend with.

When she presents to them a plan to go caroling around to all of her favorite places in the city, one kind-hearted member gently tells Lily to try breaking out of her “bubble” to meet some new friends. Motivated to try something different, Lily returns to the journal and accepts Dash’s dare to visit the pizza parlor/video store where Boomer works.

He tells her to hide the journal next to the most depressing Christmas movie she can find. Lily picks Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer and slips out the door, just as Boomer realizes what happened. Except, unlike what occurred in the first episode, we see Boomer follow Lily into the street. Despite what Boomer told Dash, he did, in fact, meet Lily.

They chat over pizza, and thus the plan to send Dash into Santaland is born. Boomer promises not to tell Dash they met, and Lily decides to seek a little revenge for him trying to trick her.

We cut to Santaland again, except this time we get to see what unfolds inside that resorts in Dash getting tossed out by an angry elf and a security guard. Lily’s dare is for him to ask Santa for her name. Lily’s beloved Uncle Sal happens to be playing Santa, and before he gives Dash his hat, he wants Dash to promise not to hurt Lily.

Things escalate as Sal gets rough, and Dash refuses to promise. Instead, he snatches the hat off Sal’s head and makes a run for it, knocking over several Christmas trees and scarring a few kids in the process. As we know, he does manage to escape with the hat and learn Lily’s name, with some assistance from Boomer, who plays the part of the distraction.

Dash asks Boomer to return the notebook for him since he’s now banned from Santaland, and Sal delivers it to Lily. “I don’t like that boy, Lily, and I don’t think your grandfather would either.”

Well, regardless of what Sal thinks, Lily is eager to read Dash’s next note to her. He agrees to her rules, no last names, no social media stalking, no pressure to meet, but personal questions are allowed — so long as answers are earned with a dare. “So Lily, what do you want for Christmas?”

In the final moments of the episode, Dash starts to feel a little Christmas spirit and turns the radio on to “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues, as he and Lily listen to the same song from their respective apartments and sing along.

During a post-credits scene, Langston and Benny enjoy Christmas cookies made by Lily on the roof, although Langston takes the credit for making them.
