Dash and Lily Episode 3 recap: ‘Hannukah’
By Mads Lennon
In Dash and Lily Episode 3, Dash dares Lily to step out of her comfort zone by attending a concert for a local Jewish punk band.
Dash and Lily Episode 3, “Hannukah,” is all about pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and embracing who you are, no matter what anyone else thinks. With the notebook back in her possession, Lily tells Dash she wants to learn more about him for Christmas, which is perfect since he dares her to visit Grand Central Station early in the morning before anyone else arrives.
As someone who enjoys solitude and stoicism, Dash wants Lily to see what he sees in the train section when it’s not overcrowded. She embraces the stunning architecture and the sparkling ceiling above. In return, Lily dares Dash to go totally zen next to a living statue in Central Park and do what he does for ten minutes. From there, they dare each other to try their favorite treats: Dash’s is a supremely salty pretzel, while Lily’s is more on the sweet side.

She then asks him to recount his favorite Christmas, because even if he claims to hate it, she’s sure he has at least one. Dash tells her about the year his parents told him he would have two Christmases, meaning more presents and two trees.
Sadly, that also resulted in him discovering they would be getting a divorce. And in exchange for him opening up, Lily answers his question (what was her worst Christmas) with an equally revealing story.
As a kid, Lily didn’t have many friends her own age and would instead spend her time making things like clothes and friendship bracelets. In honor of the winter dance, she gave everyone in attendance a bracelet, only to find all of the students had thrown them on the floor. Worst of all was a kid she called E., who laughed at her and called her weird, leaving Lily feeling ostracized and alone.
In an attempt to make Lily embrace her weird side and come into her own, Dash gives her a flyer to a secret concert for a Jewish punk band. His flyer is attached to the notebook hidden at the Alice in Wonderland statue at the park. It’s fitting since Lily will have to go down the rabbit hole herself to follow through on his challenge.
Having never gone clubbing before, she turns to Langston and Benny for some advice. They help her find a sexy, bold dress she’s never worn before and she finally gets the courage to go to the club. There, she’s confronted by a drag queen who tells her to give her some pain or “her biggest drag” to be granted entry. Lily confesses she’s never been kissed before and goes inside. Her first foray into the underground “Jewcore” scene gets off to a rough start.
She runs into a rude guest, gets a drink spilled on her, and takes refuge in the bathroom. On the verge of tears, Lily is almost ready to give up when she spots a sweet message from Dash written on the mirror. “Get back out there, Lily.” She gives it another chance and starts dancing in the middle of the dance floor, everyone starts dancing with her.
The drag queen host even gives her a crown! It looks like the night is a magical one until Lily notices E there, all grown up. E, or Edgar, calls Lily weird and she can’t help but remember that fateful day in elementary school. She bolts out of the concert venue, hails a cab, and slips in some snow outside, losing one of her red boots on the way to the taxi.
On her way back home, in tears, she bitterly laments that she forgot to leave her notebook with the band members. But perhaps, she thinks, it’s for the best, as Lily feels like she’s not the girl Dash thinks she is.
To make matters worse, when Lily does get home, she finds that her grandfather has arrived home early. Not only did he find Langston and Benny in bed together, but Lily was out of the house all night. She’s officially grounded until further notice.
