Dash and Lily Episode 5 recap: ‘Sofia & Edgar’
By Mads Lennon
In Dash and Lily Episode 5, our titular protagonists must contend with past heartbreaks and family issues as they continue their game of dares.
Dash and Lily Episode 5, “Sofia & Edgar,” begins with Dash and Lily completing their most recent dares. Lily has dared Dash to learn how to make mochi with a group of Japanese grannies. Because he can’t stop thinking about Sofia being back in town, each of his attempts is worse than the last. It’s not until he reads advice from Lily advising him to focus, clear his mind and “focus on the mochi” that he manages to make one that’s actually perfect.
Elsewhere, Lily is instructed to go to the Break Room for some arts and crafts. She thinks Dash is letting her off easy since the group within is just instructed to make something that inspires them. Lily makes a muppet meant to represent Notebook Boy and believes that’s all there is to it. But then the instructor tells everyone to head to the adjacent room and destroy their latest creations.

Lily thought “Break Room” meant that it was a place for people to take a break from the world and participate in arts and crafts! In reality, Dash wants Lily to release all of her angry, “un-Lily” feelings by breaking stuff. She can’t bring herself to destroy her muppet and tells Dash that she likes being positive and searching for the rainbow every day. She doesn’t have a real desire to go crazy with a hammer.
To prove her point, Lily makes her daily visit to a local dog park. She knows each dog there because she brings them homemade treats at the same time every day, despite not even having a dog. There, she runs into Edgar (Glen McCuen) again. Lily wonders if he even remembers their last interactions as kids — the fateful school dance, and is shocked to see him wearing the friendship bracelet she made back then. He invites Lily to a slam poetry event that night. She’s confused but decides to give him a chance.
At his dad’s apartment, Dash is shocked when his father, Gordon (Michael Park) shows up early with his bombshell new girlfriend, Leeza, in tow. They tired of the Alps, and Leeza wanted to stop by New York for a Breakfast at Tiffany’s moment before they travel to the next place on their vacation. Dash and his dad don’t have the best relationship but Gordon doesn’t seem to care that Dash has bunkered down in his apartment. He invites his son out to dinner before they leave again.
Dash frets over what to write in his notebook next. He starts to tell Lily about his ex-girlfriend, Sofia, whose texts and calls he’s been dodging. He tells Lily how Sofia is the only person who could help him get through dinners with his dad because she excelled at making the tension evaporate. But that’s not the right thing to say, so he scraps that page. Then he writes a page confessing his feelings to Lily and rips that one out, too. He decides to give up for now and calls someone to accompany him to dinner with his dad and Leeza.
We return to Lily, who walks in on an argument between Benny and Langston. Benny is going to Puerto Rico, and Langston is adamantly against trying a long-distance relationship. He’s apparently been burned badly before. They decide to break up, and when Lily tries to comfort her brother, he lashes out at her and reveals a monumental family secret.
Their parents aren’t really in Fiji for a second honeymoon. They’re there because their dad might have a job opportunity. If it works out, the family will be moving. At least, Lily will, because she’s not a legal adult yet. Lily is understandably devastated by the news, partly because of Notebook Boy, and because everyone lied to her to protect her feelings.
The dinner with Dash, his father, and Leeza doesn’t go as badly as Dash expected, primarily because of Lily’s advice about the mochi. We find out that Dash invited Sofia to be his lifeline, but she’s surprised by how much Dash has changed and comments that he hardly even needed her at dinner.
Despite Dash’s dad making several snide remarks, Dash tries to find common ground and mentions an old bookstore he used to take him to after T-ball games. It’s where Dash first fell in love with books. Before leaving with Leeza again, Gordon even asks his son if they could revisit the store when he returns. He also tells his son he’s glad Dash is back with Sofia, which Dash denies.
Lily’s night is going a lot less smoothly. While walking through the snow-covered park after Langston’s confession, she sees a happy snowman family and loses her cool, wrecking the entire thing in a way she couldn’t bring herself to do at the Break Room. Then she marches to the slam poetry night, storms the stage, and starts unleashing her feelings. She calls out Edgar for how he bullied her in middle school, blaming him for years of introversion and fear. To be fair, Edgar points out that she was just a kid then — well, so was he. They start talking after, and he invites her to a Christmas party the next night.
As the episode winds down, we focus on Dash and Sofia again. Sofia tells Dash that she’s moving back to New York and wants to be friends with him again. He hesitantly agrees, and they go to a restaurant where some of their friends are hanging out, like Priya, and — surprise, Edgar! Except Dash calls him by his last name, Thibaud. The Christmas party he’s taking Lily to is Priya’s party, and Dash will be attending too, with Sofia.
