Drew has to start dialysis in B Positive Episode 2 and tries to ensure that Gina is on the right track when it comes to being his kidney donor.

In the cold open of B Positive Episode 2, “Die Alysis,” Drew tries to respectfully end his relationship with God after discovering that he’ll have a kidney donor. “I’m not the type of guy who just ghosts people, or omniscient entities.” But in the middle of his prayer, he gets a call from his doctor. Even though he has a donor lined up, he still needs to start dialysis. Drew immediately breaks out the prayer hands again. “Dude, you are not gonna believe this.”

For dialysis, Drew will need to visit the center three times a week for three-hour sessions. He’s joined by three other members, caustic businesswoman Samantha (Briga Heelan), a dentist named Jerry (David Anthony Higgins) and Eli (Terrence Terrell), a former Superbowl-winning member of the Seattle Seahawks.

Drew’s seat was recently vacated by a woman named Cheryl, who recently received a donor. Reluctantly, Drew reveals to his new dialysis comrades that he, too, has a donor already. Samantha glares at him. “I want to punch you in the face so hard right now.”

Later, Drew contacts Gina to see if she’ll meet with him for coffee so they can check in over the whole donor thing.

On the call, some of the old folks on the bus wonder if Drew even needs a kidney and isn’t just trying to get in Gina’s pants. Norma (Linda Lavin) bets a passenger “a dollar this is one of those ‘kidney with benefits’ situations.”

At the coffee shop, Gina assures Drew everything will be fine and that his kidney is “a’comin’.” He asks her if she’ll be able to stay sober until the surgery, and Gina says it’ll be easy! “I’ve been sober for three days, not in a row but still.” Obviously, it’s not as reassuring as Drew would like, and then she excuses herself to the bathroom. Julia calls Drew while Gina is away to see if they can swap days with their daughter, Maddie. Julia doesn’t tell Drew why, but he assumes she’s going on a date. We don’t hear from Julia again in this episode, which I thought was a little weird in terms of a normal sitcom formula.

By the time he’s done chatting to his ex, Gina still hasn’t returned from the bathroom, so Drew goes to check on her. She’s made a break for it out the window. Assuming it’s over and Gina is just a massive flake, Drew leaves without her, only for Gina to fling herself in his car and yell at him to drive quickly. She reveals that she owes a sketchy guy money and thought she saw him at the coffee shop, hence why she jumped out the window.

We transition to dinner between Drew and his daughter Maddie. Thinking the worst of Gina, Drew can’t help but give Maddie some words of wisdom he hopes she’ll remember if he dies soon. Maddie thinks he’s acting weird but still doesn’t know the truth yet.

When Drew goes to his next dialysis session, he tells the others how inconsistent Gina is and wonders if it’s worth dealing with her. Jerry, Sam and Eli all agree that Drew would be crazy to let this go because the donor registry list is insane, and he doesn’t realize how good he has it.

Each of them has had a near-miss with a donor in the past that ended for reasons far more stupid or frustrating than what Drew is dealing with — who cares if Gina is a little whack? As Eli puts it, “I would take a kidney from Hannibal Lecter. You know, if it wasn’t chewed on.”

With their vote of confidence, Drew visits Gina at work, only to find her escaping out of a window yet again. Once Norma finds out Drew is just the kidney guy and not the loan shark, she calls Gina and tells her to come back. “I also know why it’s not romantic.”

Drew offers Gina a chance to move in with him during this entire process so he can help protect her from the loan shark and help her stay clean. Gina turns him down, saying she needs to hang on to her independence. To Norma’s credit, she thinks Gina is an idiot by saying no. We also learn that Gina got into this mess in the first place because she borrowed money to help a friend in money trouble. Now she’s the one in money trouble.

After work, Gina and Gabby go to Gina’s apartment and finds men ransacking her apartment. They quickly escape unnoticed.

Back at the dialysis center, Drew tells the others he’s put his name back on the donor list because he doesn’t think things will work out with Gina. To his surprise, she shows up at the end of the session to accept his move-in offer if it’s still available. As Gina moves in, she immediately starts making waves in Drew’s quiet life by befriending his neighborhood of the last seven years that Drew never has so much as spoken to. Ultimately, she encourages him to come out with her to hang out with them since, who knows, he might die soon.
