The Expanse has been renewed for a sixth and final season ahead of the Season 5 premiere.
The Expanse Season 5 hasn’t even debuted yet, but Amazon has decided to bring the series back for one final round with a sixth and final season. According to Deadline, The Expanse Season 6 is tentatively scheduled to start production on January 20.
Additionally, the publication revealed that Cas Anvar, who portrayed Alex Kamal on the show, would not be returning for the final season after he was investigated over multiple sexual misconduct allegations. Aside from Anvar, the rest of the cast and showrunner Naren Shankar are expected to return.
Some fans are likely to be surprised by the show coming to an end, especially when the series is based on a lengthy book series by James S.A. Corey. However, The Expanse has earned itself a commendable run after Syfy canceled it three seasons in. The show’s passionate fanbase launched a campaign to get it rescued, and Amazon heeded the call.
At least fans can rest easy knowing the cast and crew are prepared for the end ahead of time and can hopefully provide a proper send-off. Considering Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is an admitted superfan of the series, there’s a good chance it will get a solid ending.
For those who have yet to watch The Expanse, the acclaimed series centers around a future where humanity has inhabited the solar system. It’s an intense sci-fi series with a fascinating group of characters led by Steven Strait at its epicenter.
Shankar said, “The dedication and artistry of everyone who helps bring ‘The Expanse’ to the screen. Our fans are awesome, and we cannot wait to get rolling on Season 6.”
The fifth season of the series will debut with three episodes on December 16 and then release weekly after that through February 3.
