One Day at a Time will not be moving forward at Pop TV.

TVLine delivered some sad news regarding the fate of the beloved television sitcom One Day at a Time yesterday. The comedy series rescued by Pop TV after Netflix canceled it has been axed for a second time. To make matters worse, the series won’t even get to finish its fourth season. Production was halted after only six episodes were produced due to the pandemic. A seventh animated episode was made, but the remaining episodes of Season 4 have been scrapped.

When Pop TV initially saved the comedy after Netflix canceled it in March 2019, it was picked up for a 13-episode fourth season. Only seven aired, in total, were aired.

The decision doesn’t appear to be due to One Day at a Time‘s performance, but more so because Pop TV is ditching its scripted television content. Overall, it looks like it’s just a case of terrible timing. Not only did the pandemic disrupt production, but Pop TV is changing the way it does television — all of which doesn’t bode well for the comedy.

Pop also canceled its show Florida Girls, which had been renewed for a second season, and Flack, which had produced a second season that never aired — although Amazon Prime did step in to rescue Flack and could renew it for future seasons down the line.

Will One Day at a Time be saved again?

According to the publication, Sony Pictures Television plans to shop the series around for a second time. However, the odds of it being saved again are slim. The best fit would likely be CBS or CBS All Access because they’ve already been streamings some of the older episodes, but due to contractual problems, it’s not clear if CBS is actually allowed to save the show.

Perhaps in another year or so, we could see a “revival” of sorts happen. I wouldn’t count the show completely dead just yet, even if it isn’t rescued in its current iteration. I think the fanbase is passionate enough that we could see it return in some shape or form, even if it not right away.
