2. Freeform: Motherland: Fort Salem
A list of underrated TV shows from 2020 would not be complete without Freeform’s Motherland: Fort Salem. This gem of a show takes place in a world where witches in the United States agreed to fight for their country in exchange for the freedom to live in peace. The story follows three new recruits for this witch army, Raelle Collar (Taylor Hickson), Abigail Bellweather (Ashley Nicole Williams), and Tally Craven (Jessica Sutton). Together, they make up a unit and have to work together, despite initially not wanting to.
Raelle is still reeling from her mother’s untimely demise on the front lines and only expects to gain an early death from joining the army. That and maybe some answers as to how her mother was really killed. Those two things are all she lets herself want and need, that is until she meets Scylla Ramshorn (Amalia Holm), a fellow soldier who she ends up falling for.
On the other hand, Abigail comes from a long line of soldiers and only wants to live up to that legacy. In comparison, Tally joins the army, despite her mother’s protests, out of a desire to make a real difference in the world. As time goes on, the Bellweather unit, as they come to be known, grows closer. Raelle, Abigail, and Tally are always there for each other and use their abilities, known in the show as “work,” to help the army and help each other.
Watching the three main characters develop is intriguing, but make no mistake, this is an action-packed show. There are twists and turns here and there. So watch it now. You won’t regret it!
